I am giving Facebook a whirl too. Not putting up much there at the moment because of the TSA, but I too have made contact with folks I'd lost touch with. And they seem more comfortable posting there than emailing. Go figure?

The internet is the biggest innovation in communications since the telephone. And it's much more accessible than most public libraries today with their budget cuts and minimal open hours. So its importance can't be minimized. Information and communication is must for any civilization.

we can thank the obama administration and diane feinstein for wanting to put even more strict controls on the internet. all under the bullshit pretext of wanting to eliminate child porn online. one thing to keep in mind about diane, is that she's part of the crowd who thinks only police and military should have guns. she also screamed loudly about halliburton, meanwhile keeping quiet about her own husbands no bid contracts in iraq.

i'm glad someone is bringing this up, thank you. should they bring back the so claled fairness doctrine, it's going to effect non mainstream sources of news the most. in otherwords, should these idiots get their way with us all. things will be a lot more censored than they are now. for all you folks who had the anybody but a rich white male voting mentality, thanks a lot. any guy who refuses to present a simple carbon copy of his actual birth certificate never should have been allowed to run for office to begin with.

but this goes beyond just one side, both are equally to blame as far as i'm concerned. the dumbocrats sat back and allowed bush to do almost everything he desired for eight years.

dude. instead of ranting, educate us. you are right, barely any of them know what's going on, but how are they suppose to if no one lets them know? the 'higher power' seems to do an alright job at hiding the truth you know, some of them have the right mind set to enlighten themselves but haven't found the truth they need to let the revolution within themselves to take place ..anger really got the better of you here, but i will say, i do agree with you, it'd just be cool to do it in a gentle manner? but i suppose you were expressing what state you were in at the time.

Do you have any ideas how old this thread is? I originally posted it in 2006. I was trying to stir some of the voters here to stop this legislation before it was enacted. Guess what it was passed and even more legislation expanding restrictions was passed. And most of you got more upset about being called stupid or dumb by me than you did about being viewed that way by your legislators.

    Right on.

Education begins with yourself, and while I agree a lot of facts are hidden from us by the main stream media, the internet provides an amazing wealth of information (and mis-information if you're not careful), but you gotta poke around a bit. As any of us older folks can appreciate, it was a hell of a lot more work to research anything before the internet became accessible. The internet also provides a powerful tool for rallying potential voters as Obama's victory in the election demonstrates.

When it comes to issues of civil rights and personal liberties, aclu.org is a good resource, check it out. You can't take freedom for granted, since there are all kinds of political critters out there like bush and cheney who would take it away from us, so it behooves us to be aware of which politicians are doing so, so we can vote their asses out of office. Like the ACLU slogan says, "freedom can't protect itself."

I think if you are a real hippie you should not bother to judge others..You're a hippie if you don't worry about rules, politics, money and privacy. Who cares if they use us for marketing? Let them do it..Everybody is too worried about what other people think these days..I love all hippies just the way they are. Some are wannabe hippies others real hippies for life!

"You call yourselves hippies, but you don't even know what that means, you think it's all about tye dye and rock music, drugs and partying. If you are serious it's about saving this world for a place for your kids to grow up."

    ^ from the original post..

not true at all, i am young and i definitely would not consider myself naive at all. the word "hippie" and the meaning behind it is actually quite significant to me. i definitely wouldn't be caught dead saying that it's " all about tye dye and rock music, drugs and partying." that's just about the most ignorant thing i've ever heard.

    Consider this:

    3 years.

    175 posts.

    150,000+ members.

If most of these wannabes aren't really wannabes, why don't they step up? Everyday I see it. Young dread head in a deadhead shirt with an iPod eathing McDs and drinking coke, wearing Vans and driving a Mercury Marquis. The options change but the story is the same. Conspicuous consumption and corporate sycophancy.

    We have reached peak apathy.

I do think that the world before modern medicine & such was a very limited one, you cant deny that. people lived to be about 30. But as for the material world and all that comes with it i do think that our quality of life would be better without it.

As for the internet, i think of it the same way i would think of an open book... infinite knowlege. However it bother me that kids these days dont know how to open a damn book.

There is a sense that if the internet became restricted and all the sudden sites just started dropping like flies, people would get a sense of censorship and oppression. Of course, this depends on how fast they do it and how they go about it. I didn't have time to read this entire thread, just the first and last page so I don't actually know how in depth this conversation might have gone. Meanwhile, I can see a serious threat and danger of the right forces wanting to restrict the internet (aka government and military) and for good reasons too.

For example, I don't know how many of you heard about the documentary "Conspiracy of Silence" It's a documentary on pedophilia/child abuse rings taking place in the highest levels of government. The documentary was originally supposed to air on the discovery channel back in 1994, but was taken off the air last minute due to pressures from such government officials. Now, you can watch this documentary on the internet ( Source ) , a place where freedom of information has not yet been trampled.

Also, Another link from the same website relating directly to the issue of the military planning to control the internet. (a very good website by the way)

Hippies kill any chance of having political influence the second the decide to live and express a hippy lifestyle. Politiics is about communication, what you can communicate and to who. communication decides the direction and momentum of the direction that a democracy takes. Hippies give up their political power when they choose to rebel against societal norms because people just dont listen to these types. Also, hippies stay in the altnerative social circles that exist in our world and the mainstream are left obvlivious. Look at clubs, for example, the number of youths that go to these dance drug and booz gatherins is staggering and you never see ONE hippy there, yet for political change, its the place you would expect them to be...changing the culture into a political culture not just a work, drink and party on the weekends culture. the cultural divisions in our society are a huge problem, tackle that before you complain about hippies....they try, but they know that their peers, ignorant and closed minded wont change. So why try to change that which cant be changed....fight as much as you want, the sun will always rise tommorow, no matter how much you try....so save your words, the sounds they are, will pose nothing but nothing to an already empty sea of thoughts.

You shouldn't generalize like that. I am young, and so are a lot of my friends and we understand the agenda of the gov't and I am trying to fight it and trying ot change the world, and make it a better place for my baby nephew and my possible future children to live in. I don't think life is all about drugs and partying, and definitely not tye-dye :p. I do agree that the whole 'hippie' thing is 'in style' now and a lot of young people are just doing it for that reason, and have no idea about anything, but like I said, you really shouldn't generalize and stereotype like that.

Agreed. I have mad respect for you older hips... but you are making extremely broad generalizations. I do see where you are coming from though. Just know we aren't all on that train :)
