Good morning again. It is now the time to wake up and face reality.

The Inquisition tortured millions and killed probably tens of thousands over several hundred years.

Estimates for number of deaths during the crusades range from 1 million to 7 million, so take your pick.

Just to pile it on, there was something called the 30 year war which killed something like 8 million people.

    Wakey wakey ....

Ghost, do you really think the inquisition tortured and killed solely for religious reasons? It seems to me it was for a large part catholic fear for losing power and influence. Same with the crusades: what's the best way to get a bunch of deluded 'nobles' and their bumpkin followers to stop destroying their own people and lands? Find a common enemy somehwere else and declare it as such in the name of God. Of course the fact that these enemies invaded and occupied Spain for centuries and came back via east Europe later helped a lot. Soo, really that some things are attributed to God doesn't mean it was primarily or soleley a religious thing. Now, in the case of the 30 year war I have to say that was primarily a religious war. But there also other things played a role. Affiliations of certain states, protestant countries being sucked dry economically by their catholic overlords, etc.

At the highest levels religion is politics and not much else. Otherwise a religion wouldn't build their temples in the exact same spot as the previous religion.

All the bullshit is for the masses of course. But if you declare to be in the name of god then that's what it is.

I know that a religion is just an excuse for a lot of horse manure but many others don't.

The balancing act this thread is experiencing is as beautiful as it is ugly. Perception and acceptance are like the notes echoing from a pianists rendition. Harsh staccato intermingling with melody and always pregnant with the next note before the finger even falls.

Estimates of the numbers of people killed by Stalin, Pol Pot and Mao dwarf the numbers killed by Christians, and were done much closer to our own time. And they were atheists! Before then, the secular French Revolutionaries added to the body count. And "Chrisitians" is a big umbrella, including Quakers, Methodists, Disciples of Christ, UCC. etc, who, to the best of my knowledge, haven't ever been involved in mass murders.

Death simply is I think. The cause only matters when one reasons it out.

Reasons are killers. What makes a reason good or bad if not perceived impetus toward a certain goal. Whether good, bad, or somewhere in between reason always gives a perceived excuse for the effective action.

In this case reason cast it's shadow and death was the effective action. Sad yes however not surprising
