That makes it so unfair that cows have four of them.

the reason ppl were be-rating the girl on here, even though it was the bar that sold it is:

dude it's liquid nitrous. everyone knows what liquid nitrous is, and most ppl in their right mind im sure would have too much common sense to drink it, even if it's being served at a bar. and yes its a sad story

To be fair, I think you need to read the thread more intently.

If I go and someone serves me liquid nitrogen, I sure won't drink it. Being in a bar doesn't dismiss you from thinking.

There's no reason to expect someone that young to know it was a bad idea.

I completely agree. Not everyone is bestowed with knowledge about that sort of thing. I wouldn't drink it now, but there's no telling what I would have done at 18. 18 year olds tend to be kind of naive. I, personally, would not expect to be served something potentially deadly at a business, bar or otherwise. The bartender fucked up and put too much in her drink. She was probably with others who were drinking the same thing, but she got too much. If everyone else was doing it and it seemed like it wasn't having any adverse effects on anyone else, then I could see an 18 year old kid saying, "Why the hell not?" and drinking it herself. Hell, I could see ME doing something like that. The fact is that someone at the bar fucked up and THEY should be held responsible. The kid should be left alone.

Is there a special age when people start thinking?

It would be nice to know what can kill you and what can't, though.

    Alcohol is potentially deadly.

Because it is stupid and pointless.

Sure, but thats a whole other thing. Putting your life in hands of some random guy at a bar for no point is just plain stupid.

18 year olds are fucking stupid, no one is disagreeing with you there, but damn, the poor kid didn't deserve to lose her stomach because she made a poor decision. 18 years old was an age where I fucked up ALL THE TIME, you are still very much learning at that age. And it's just sad that her dumb decision left her fucked for the rest of her life. I don't see where berating the kid is necessary.

Judging by how our system is working at the moment - she'll probably go through a 'fit-to-work' assesment and be given a clean bill of health, and advised: "Ever think about bar work?"

We don’t berate her, we berate ourselves because we remember how dumb, stupid, and reckless we were at 18.

She reminds us of what we were and how easily we too could have made that same mistake.

Yeah, it's certainly done that to me, and I guess that's why I've been defending her. I can definitely imagine myself doing the same thing at that age, because how cool would it have been to brag to all my friends that I drank something like that? I can't hold the decision against her, because I very well could have been in the same position, had I had the opportunity to try a drink like that at 18. But there are posters who are responding as though they would have never done something stupid, even at 18, and just about every one knows better.

I'm 18, I've done stupid things, but not THAT stupid. And I sure don't care if this is cool or what my friends would say.
This isn't stupid, this is plain retarded. If she stuck fork into her eye would you say that she was just 18, stupid and wanted to look cool?

Perhaps you won’t make the same mistake, but there are plenty of other mistakes floating around out there in the cosmic soup and some of them have your name on them

I guess you and I just see it much differently. We can just leave it at that because I feel if I argue much further, my intelligence will come into question.

Something is only "stupid" if you have the knowledge in the first place to be able to perform the reasoning that would make it evident that you should not do it. You happen to know that liquid nitrogen can be very dangerous. This girl did not, and it was a drink being served at a bar, which people around her were drinking.

This morning in class one of the girls I was sitting near had no idea what "crepes" were. She lacked the knowledge to inform her of whether they were delicious or not delicious. Some people teased her because of this hole in her knowledge, but unless she was raised somewhere crepes were a common food, there is really no reason to assume she would had that knowledge.

A lot of the time when we talk about "smart" or "stupid", we make assumptions about what information we think a person should have been exposed to. This is why we often assign a value judgment to actions that are actually the result of naivete, and not stupidity.
