I wanted to dread before I really knew anything about what it meant, but after researching it I had no qualms to begin. It does look pretty cool.
Howdy: Im Matt but most poople call me Harris. Ive been scanning these forums for a while but never signed up 'till today. This is my first post. My Dreads are six months old, much time and effort has gone into them. At six months my dreads are finally starting to look cool. This is my list of things I have learned so far: 1. Having your hair in dreadlocks is always going to be more work then you 'thought' it would be (unless this isnt your first time around). 2. Know why you are going dready have a network for support, or you wont make it. (I started my dreadlock journey with a shaved head, grew my hair for almost a year before I even started with the dreads - maybe that makes me a purist). 3. Dreads are like finger prints, everybodys dreads are unique. Take advice from others with that in mind. Something that worked for him/her may not work for you. 4. The debate over 'waxing' is stupid. And some people seem to get really worked up over it. Just stay out of it, save yourself the headache. K. see ya.
Welcome Harris. I would have to agree with you for the most part. Post pics when you get a chance. =)
ello im christina-- im an artist from new zealand- hopefully not here for too much longer.. am new around here- but have been so totally inspired by everyone in here- i stumbled upon this site when i googled dreadlocks- as ive been thinking about my next path in my lifes journey- i wanted to learn more/see more/feel more- i dont quite know what will happen/change by starting the dread process- but im almost there- soooooooo,,, any advice- any support- any comments on the journey- throw em my way xx
Having locks is mostly an exercise in patience and learning to open your mind to freedom. You will be judged/misunderstood by many (including other people with dreadlocks... especially in this forum ), but if you think you can handle it; it's a lot of fun to watch those suckers grow and mature.
Would love to throw you that advice, but mine are still just 8 months young, so here is some support for you!
ah yes im familiar with all those hurdles- tattoos- single mum at 21- i like hearing what people think about me- and seeing how wrong they really are- observing- its interesting and yup i can imagine in this forum i will be judged- already have been but im open- and easy plus i live in a country full of stoners and dreaded misfits- so in that sense im lucky- NZ is kinda chill layed back place- dont get me wrong we have assholes galore- but it seems every time i walk down the street now- i see dreads- im *aware* cheers for the positive feedback too- its refreshing x
haha thanks man- every bit helps yeah? i was like... is he supporting me by sending me a picture of the mad hatter...? thats really... nice..? haha- but ahhhh 8 months young sounds exciting at this point
