Memphis is one of my favorite party towns. Great music of all kinds, and plenty of good bars and clubs. Nashville is more country, but still has some variety. I like to visit Chattanooga, but wouldn't enjoy living someplace that small. The best thing about East Tennessee is easy access to the Great Smoky Mountains. It's a nature lover's paradise. The Smokys sit on the border with North Carolina, so you also have good access to them from Asheville, NC. Asheville isn't as wild as Memphis, but it has more going on than anywhere in East Tennessee.
