i listened to one of his lectures today (a benefit for botanical dimensions in 91, i believe) where timothy leary was present and spoke very briefly before the lecture, and credited mckenna with saying what he had wanted to himself, only much better. his comments seemed to me to promote the idea that even leary felt mckenna's work was better and more informed than was his own.
timewave zero is a theory of time thats no more absurd than the I Ching or the maya calender I'm not saying the timewave zero is completely true and accurate, but this notion that time comes in waves and it is mappable. This is no new concept, many cultures have similiar philosophies of time. Is the timewave true? I dunno, but the notion and intuition behind it is very true I believe.
Food of the Gods is an interesting read and makes some excellent points, however a handful of his arguments seemed to me to be fairly labored. this is no issue for me, though. as he stated on more than one occasion he is no smarter than anyone else, and they are simple musings and speculations based on available evidence and reason.
actually it is slightly more absurd, but this argument certainly isn't very good if your goal is to convince someone that his novelty theory isn't absurd... of course, i have no issue with absurdity in certain areas, and don't think the absurdity here invalidates his ideas....but it certainly casts serious doubt on them.
The thing about Timewave Zero is that its placed subjectively on a timeline of human history. He looked at the graph, and decided where he thought would be the best places to match up with historical events. It is a pretty interesting coincidence that he landed on the same day as the Long Count calendar, but what Im starting to think is, what if its a self fulfilling prophesy? What if humans conciously decide to take our leap into hyperspace intentionally on Dec 23? Probably has to do with the Large Hadron Collider, if you ask me.
How can someone such as McKenna do much harm when one of his main messages was to go out and get first hand, direct experienced knowledge for yourself instead of listening to certain individuals in society telling you how to live your own life? If you read into McKenna too strongly then you might begin to misguide yourself. But I feel he is a great catalyst for newcomers, such as myself, into the psychedelic world. My experience on mescaline turned out to be incredible, due to one statement he had said about the universe having a very feminine feel to it. This turned me onto a tangent about how much unrelinquished love (silly unsophisticated human term) the universe provides, whether or not we choose to feel it. This made me start thinking of what consciousness is, how humans attempt to control everything, and so on and so forth. I feel indebted to this one man who after his death still continues to influence the world. Better a man such as he who tells people to use psychedelics for good rather then to party mindlessly.
Even before I heard Mckenna's optimistic speeches, my personal psychedelic experiences had renewed a sense of hope in me, and a faith in the beautiful pattern... But it was hard to come back to a society that was somehow both psychedelic and anti-psychedelic at the same time. Like it was this crazy big secret that no one knew about/talked about. He was the only one who could describe anywhere close to what I had experienced... and that's somehow built a bridge for me to go from. As for the timewave... I'm sure the next 3 years are going to be pretty eventful, but we'll just have to wait and see about 12/21/2012. If it is a going to be a self-fulfilling prophecy though... we need fewer Transformers and more transforming machine elves.
