mad, I don't think it's a matter of not being greatful for actually receiving a gift, but rather being displeased for the gift's contents.

My mom, for ages when I was younger, would buy me the frilliest things - and I mean the girliest jewelery, dresses that ACTUALLY were frilly and lacy etc, things that I obviously would never wear, and often flat out said how much I didn't like those items. It's not that I didn't appreciate the effort she put in buying the gift, but I hated that she was imposing what she thought I ought to like into that gift.

I think that's where the frustration lies. I think most people would appreciate a gift of any kind, but when a gift is given and there's no real thought put behind it, then it serves little if any purpose. Like buying a vegetarian a Meat Basket Of The Month membership (if such a thing exists).

Many of us seem to agree in the thread that if you truly want to give a gift, that sort of money could often be better spent as a donation in the receiver's name rather than spending money on an unnecessary gift.

toy weapons, or real ones. now that has to be the most inane possible immaginable of christmas gifts. unless, well i can think of perhaps one or two circumstances and conditions under which it might not be. conditions under which getting or giving any kinds of gifts at all would be pretty darn unlikely anyway. but otherwise that has to be totaly insane.

another thing that is just plane wrong to give someone, unless they are really intimately familiar with its species, both to its physical needs and its emotional and spiritual ones, and have adiquite means of providing them as well, is live animals.

of course dead animals might be kind of gross too.

model toy rocket launchers. why oh why. unless the recepient is an avid miniatures war gamer or something. but even then i question the wisedom of such things even being produced.

it's SUPPOSED to be about peace and love. good will and all that! with or without whatever implications of belief.

and yes of course, meat of the month would NOT be an appropriate gift for vegitarians.
