Not sure what thread is doing in Flashbacks. It does remind me of some of the mentality of the Vietnam era when some people were still supporting that conflict as if it was a good thing.

The govt has gotten a little more sophisticated today in that it works with the corporate media in doing a psychology job on people to support a war, something we didn't have during the Vietnam war. The corporate business world is in on it also, such as Walmart giving out free 'support the war' stickers. There weren't stickers all over people's cars supporting the Vietnam war. The govt didn't have a 911 as a rallying cry back then either. All of this makes it more difficult to get people to see through the sales job that's been done on them and look at the reality of the situation.

Most of America and the Iraqis realize now that the Bush administration screwed up bigtime in Iraq. 10,000 Iraqi civilian deaths this summer alone and we've now spent more on Iraq than Vietnam. The debate now is mainly over how to exit, whether to leave right now or try to stay and salvage something from the colossal mess that the administration made in Iraq.

My brother has been in the air force for 18 years now, he is an M.P. and a dog handler...his dogs sniff out bombs. He just came back last week from the middle east, we are native american.....and he has seen things that he says will haunt him till he dies...but he's not allowed to talk about it.

Sorry, I'm not really into violence and blasting innocent children from the face of the earth in an attempt to annihlate a certain group of people. I'm more into, you know, love, peace, learning to be tolerant and solving disputes like adults instead of firing nukes and wiping out the entire human race... but thanks anyway. I guess this is a free country. -note- this is an /anti-war/ free speech site.
Oh, and "soldiers" are brainwashed pawns of the government. I mean, the thought of TAKING SOMEONE'S LIFE is unthinkable. Well, keep on supportin your troops. Someday they're going to completely exterminate the human race with atomic bombs and trust me, I don't think you'll be thanking them then.

We also trained the Chinese to protect us and others from the Japanese prior to and during WWII. Yes, I remember my history, and experienced it. We also helped the Russians against Germany. We also fought the Vichy before we even got around to the Germans. We also now do trade with Viet Nam, Panama, Uganda, Cambodia and Italy. What's your point? Alliances and coalitions come and go according to many factors; political, economic, social and military to name a few. You think everything is carved in stone and any deviation is a sign of failure? Naive! Here's something for you, Sparky. The sale of drugs, 90% of the Opium shipped to Europe comes from Afganistan, funds the Taliban and Al Quida, not to mention the amount sold here in the larger US. Other drugs from other countries that fill the coffers of terrorists? For all you drug buyers, do you know what the money is used for that you pay to buy your cheap thrills? They have got to be laughing their asses off at your naivity! And then you bitch about the problems in the countries where you fund those that oppress. Rflowerchild, take heart. There are people who understand what you feel, and will always support those you honor with your words. That's because you understand the personal side of those who guard the gates of freedom. They're real people who deserve our support. That's what you have asked us to give, and I join you in doing just that.

My understanding is that when the Taliban ran Afganistan they nearly had the opium poppies wiped out. (Just like them to destroy a bunch of farmers livelyhoods...) But since WE went over there to "take charge", the poppy crop is flourishing... I figure the American govt. LIKES a bunch of opiated masses. Makes them easier to control.
    My advice, grow your own.

The Clinton administration nearly formally recognized the Taliban because of the interest in an oil pipeline over there. They changed their mind and didn't in the end. Pakistan is the only government to have formally recognized the Taliban, as far as I know. Their roots were in Pakistan.

The Taliban was destroying a lot of things. What a pathological group. The destroying of the giant Buddhist statues was a glaring example. That was about 6 months before 911. I remember seeing it on TV and thinking what a bunch of demented people they were.

Various groups, such as museums, offered to take the statues away free of charge but the Taliban didn't like that either. They just had to destroy those objects.

A climber in the 1930s did a 3-d survey of the statues, so they can be reproduced.

BAQUBA, Iraq (Reuters) - U.S. air strikes destroyed a house during a gun battle before dawn in a restive city north of Baghdad which killed eight people, the military said.

U.S. forces had attracted fire from a building in Baquba during a raid in pursuit of suspected al Qaeda militants, the military said in a statement.

Soldiers initially killed two men and then ordered air strikes, which killed two more men and four women, it said.

Two other men and a woman were wounded, and the U.S. forces treated them before detaining the men and taking the woman to hospital. The statement described all the men killed and wounded as terrorists.

"Coalition forces strive to mitigate risks to civilians while in pursuit of terrorists. Terrorists continue to deliberately place innocent Iraqi women and children in danger by their actions and presence," it said.

Relatives said the dead were a family of seven and a neighbor.

"I was inside preparing for Ramadan morning meal. I heard explosions and shooting and I ran out," one young, weeping woman told Reuters television as neighbors held her arms.

"When I came back I saw all my family killed. My father -- four women and three men. All of them, including my brother and his pregnant wife. They took two of our family away, a man and a woman. They were wounded," she said. She did not give her name.

Baquba is in Diyala province where many locals are hostile to U.S. forces and al Qaeda militants have strong influence.

Earlier reports from Iraqi police wrongly described the air strikes as a mortar attack. The U.S. military said it knew of no mortar attack in the area and neighbors interviewed by Reuters television confirmed the building was hit by air strikes.

This month is Ramadan, when Iraqis wake before dawn for a large meal and fast during the day.

    Charlie Brown, Charlie Brown
He's a clown, that Charlie Brown
    He's gonna get caught
    Just you wait and see
(Why's everybody always pickin' on me)

    That's him on his knees
    I know that's him
    Yeah, from 7 come 11

    Charlie Brown, Charlie Brown
He's a clown, that Charlie Brown
    He's gonna get caught
    Just you wait and see

Who's always writing on the wall
Who's always goofing in the hall
    Who's always throwing spit balls
Guess who (who, me) yeah, you

Who walks in the classroom, cool and slow
Who calls the English teacher, Daddy-O

    Charlie Brown, Charlie Brown
He's a clown, that Charlie Brown
