Expressed strictly as a mathematic equation it means one thing. If I were in charge of crews 2+2 might represent two crews of two people each that can operate independently of each other and 4 could mean four indispensable members of a crew- the four piece unit would not properly function in the absence of one of its members. There are nuances that create interpretive exceptions belying blanket statements.
So: crew_01 consists of 2 workers and crew_02 consists of 2 workers. They work for 4 hours then have 1 hour lunch break and another 4 hours of work. The crews perform tasks that are completely unrelated and they do not even work in the same physical area. How many workers will you see at lunch in the cafeteria if the company pays for the food? Interpretive exceptions is not really what I would call that.
I was merely pointing out where 2+2 might not necessarily equal 4 and not offering an invitation to a circular debate where my own ego-based urges that compel me to "make" others see as I do would push me into a frustrating go-around in something that neither party could win despite the likelihood that each might claim they did... so it was just my opinion.
I got that. It just is too much of a headgame to me to try to strip math apart by playing with words. So I responded. Same goes for the cashier's comment. Try to pay 3 dollars worth of food if you deny that 1+1+1=3. Got no 3 dollar bill? too bad.
Ahh- well the OP seemed to be a rant over dismissive reactions people have- that one might see as a calculated assault on a person's grasp of facts. "That's just your opinion" is wording that casts a shadow on the credibility of a speaker. There's also preemptive word choice like "Everyone knows that..." which seems intent on establishing a forthcoming statement as incontrovertible. It will likely put anyone holding a differing view on the defensive which can have an effect on how they respond.

Oh, I hate that so much! I hear it all the time. Those statements are never true. I can't think of anything on earth that everybody knows or agrees with. That may be the first fact to be proven beyond a reasonable doubt by the internet community.
Fact is based upon interpretation of data or information. It is subjective to the precessing of data. Opinion is based upon the same. The personal interpretation of information and subjective to bias. Without agreement there is no fact. Fact is only a fact if both parties agree to that, otherwise it is opinion.
No, two's not enough for consensus... Wouldn't it have sucked being Galileo when the church made him recant?
Consensus? That doesn't necessarily matter either. There was a time when most people on earth "knew" the "fact" that if you went too far out in a sailing ship, you would fall off the edge of the earth. Nobody could go find that edge because it didn't exist. The earth didn't care if anybody thought it was round or not, and it still doesn't. It is what it is.
