To some degree, politeness is required for harmony on this world. I think being personable is more suited for harmony. The word "polite" has a smarmy marmy sound to it...and rightfully so. No one likes a pushover.
people say its polite to ask 'how are you' at the start of a conversation. i think it demeans the very question because rarely will anyone want to hear a spiel about how someone is at the start of a conversation. people generally ask 'how are you' and then are responded 'fine, yourself?' 'im good, so anyway blabla' sometiems people do expect to hear how one is, but the fact that people do it automatically makes it largely unconditional and worthless. i find it so annoying that when people ask me how i am, i just say 'im fine' and continue on teh conversation. i only ask when im interested. if everyone really is honestly interested in how i am each time they speak to me, then theyve got obsessive problems and should start worrying about their own lives. but i think thats largely just my individual oppinion that i dont expect other people to agree on
