Anyone who says the Beatles are boring and overrated are certainly 100% unaware of what the Beatles were all about. Oh, and to the person who said that the Beatles are just another Boy Band... you've got to be kidding me. All you have to do is sit down, and actually LISTEN to the music. Not just the sound, but the words... and not just the words, but the sound... and listen to them together. The Beatles WERE revolutionary, and definitely paved the way for music, videos, and the industry today. It's hard to think of another group that was as flexible as the Beatles. Like someone else said on here (I forget who) they don't even fit into one "type" of music. I could go on and on.... but I'm sure people who make such narrow comments have no interest in the truth anyway. *sigh* You're missing out on something awesome, man...

for a long time after punk people declared the beatles to be over rated. and sgt pepper to be over rated etc. but i think it has come to a point where they have been over rated for so long that they are now way too under rated. i mean the velvet underground, and nuggets compilations and all that are all well and good. but if you stop worryign about what bands are trendy to like and hate you might come to realise that the beatles are actually worthy of being a highly rated band. the format that they popularised and got big with is pretty much THE template that every band has followed since.

I don't think Sgt. Pepper's aged well at all. Hendrix and The Byrds managed to age alot better in my opinion.

Their early stuff WAS great! It's so much easier to learn all the words, making it more fun to sing along.

    The Beatles are not overrated.
On lyrics and musical talent alone they stand at the top of the Rock & Roll list.
I know that anybody who says they are overrated has only heard maybe 1,2 or 3 of their songs, and they were probably the early poppy ones.
Before you make accusations like this do some fuckin research.

    Also:
to the person who said punk rockers say The Beatles are overrated!
99% of what I listen to is punk. I do not believe that!!!

Has anybody else heard that the Beatles and Pink Floyd crossed paths in the studio at some point?

Not only were The Beatles a great band, but they changed with the times and changed the times they were in.

Should we note that we would not be having this conversation if they hadn't influenced generations of musicians and music lovers alike?

The only thing they did was create the wave of pop that we currently have, and they proved to record labels that rock was marketable as hell. Stop praising them like they were gods. All they did was write pop music, and all you do is continue to praise them like they were sooo origional. Yeah, like there weren't 5.2 million other bands doing the same thing or better in the underground, and you can't tell me there weren't because back then the only music that even got recorded had to be done by record labels/companies (unlike today). That is why people think that at some point in the past the music industry was sacred or better somehow, but you are all probibly missing out on some of the most groundbreaking music because it wasn't ever recorded. Thanks to the Beatles, we will never hear any of that music, be it good or bad, because, thanks to people like you and other Beatles maniacs, the Beatles cast a huge shadow on the underground scene by being the overrated pop success they were. It's like if Britney Spears was successful enough that nobody would shut up about her, and she inevitably took all the attention off of another act like At the Drive In to the point where no record execs would record them and no people would hear them. Also, save your "just listen to the blah blah blah" or your "you just don't get it" trite bullshit for someone who hasn't heard every Beatles song in history already.

Fuck the Beatles. Fuck them up their stupid asses.

While not necessarily the greatest musicians ever, both in innovation and in skill at their instruments, the beatles indeed were, and still are, one of the most influential bands ever. They weren't the first rock band, and they werent the last, but anyone who says that there is any band today rock music (or any of its derrivations) that wasn't influenced, either directly or indirectly, should really take a look at what they are talking about. The beatles influenced a generation, and all music of the era after their split has been influenced. Taking what the beatles had done and evolving it, reacting to it, to name the two extremes of influence. Just cause the music today sounds different, maybe completely different, doesn't mean that it couldn't possibly have been influenced by it. Even if a band hated the beatles, and did all in their power to sound different from them, is that not influence? That band would not have sounded that way if the beatles had not been there. Trace any rock band influence to influence, all the way back to the sixties, and you will find some connection to the beatles. They were a milestone which changed rock forever.

    Influence isn't imitation.

Personally, i love the beatles, i think they were a great band, and i have respect for all of their individual talents. They were better songwriters than musicians, yes, but that isn't bad. If you judge music purely by musical talent then look to either classical music, for technical skill, or jazz, for improvisation, in these genres there tends to be a much greater concentration of skill and talent than in rock and roll. I could go on at much greater legnth, but, i won't bore you all, i've said my piece.

Well said Beckly, but my point still stands that they didn't actually change anything. They were just guys writing music. Human kind and music in turn changed on our own, not because of anything the Beatles did. They were just in the spotlight when the change occurred, and therefore they will always be given credit for changing the face of music when in reality the face of music would change and would have changed without them. Music and the human spirit were and always have been on a progressive path. Before the Beatles and after the Beatles all the major shifts in music came from the jazz scene. Jazz has had more influence on the shape of music than anything else, and yet it never gets the credit for it. Everything the Beatles did had been done to death by the jazz community 20 years or more before them. Take, for example, Mr. Miles Davis, who for decades stayed fresh with his material which dictated to the rest of the community what was cool, and he was always hip with the youth up until he died. That's a real feat, and way more influential to music than the happy little records the Beatles made in their tenure. The End.

Boy could they write a song. In the early days they were songs that you could tap your foot and enjoy singing along to with good melodies and lots of hooks. In the later days they were all that plus innovative. The songs got even better. Album after album was just packed with gems.

Overall I definitely don't worship them and I don't even listen to them anymore but I acknowledge they're probably the most important band ever.

right, can you actually say that any band or artist got better with time?? the first album is probably the worst and the last album is arguably the best. most bands/artists actually have their first few releases that are pretty good, but then they seem to tail off as they continue recording.
