Jimi Hendrix Trey Anastasio (you all know its true, go see him while you can...don't be a dumbass)) Jerry Garcia Jimmy Page Van Halen
I do have to say that if Yngwie or Tom Morello died tomorrow, Yngwie would most likely have the greater popularity. Of course, I agree, John McLaughlin is still better than any shredder, in my opinion.
Hey Viking. Way to quote me completely out of context great job man. If you think that Yngwie could pull strings half as well as BB..well damn man you're on an island that can't be fucking reached. The point was there are different styles. How fast someone can play by no means qualifies them as the BEST guitarist or a good musician at ALL. It's about connectivity with an audience. I can't for the life of me really sing one of Yngwie's melodies off the top of my head. I'm not a Rage fan, but I can still hum plenty of Morello's. So a musician's skill level has nothing to do with making music? Dude...so Yngwie is definately the best guitar technician I know. But no musician.
I never tried to measure the quality of anyones style, because it cant be done. nor did I attempt to define any sort of connection between skill level and the quality of the music itself. Ive repeated this same statement what, five times now? pulling strings is obviously not a difficult technique to use. how can you begin to measure such a subtle action anyways, not to mention that this is another one of the things that falls under the "style" category? and have you ever seen Yngwie play? I would bet money that you havent, because you obviously havent given much thought to his music thats because your brain cant process that many notes hes not a musician because you dont like him? youre a fucking piece of dirt HERES A NOTE TO EVERYONE READING THIS THREAD: IF YOURE GOING TO OPENLY OPPOSE WHAT I SAY, AT LEAST READ MY POSTS BEFORE YOU TRY TELLING ME THAT AVRIL LAVIGNE CAN SHRED BETTER THAN YNGWIE. AND IF YOU CANT DO THAT, THEN DONT EXPECT A REPLY FROM ME EVER AGAIN. IVE ALREADY REPEATED MYSELF FAR TOO MANY TIMES, AND NONE OF YOU EVEN BOTHER TO READ WHAT I SAY. YOU JUST KEEP SAYING THE EXACT SAME THINGS AND GETTING THE EXACT SAME ANSWERS. THIS THREAD HAS DETERIORATED BEYOND RECOGNITION, AND I NO LONGER WANT TO LAY MY EYES UPON THIS SORRY HEAP OF TRASH. THIS IS MY FINAL POST
Yeah, BB is definately better than anyone I've ever seen. I got to talk to his band's director and whatnot.
this thread had deteriorated because of you, dont blame others.. All i did was state who I THOUGHT was the best guitarist and i stated that to me that Tom was one who i thought was great.. and you cried about it and continously harrassed me about it basically....leave it alone and let it go...
at last someone said Fareed! now aside from Orsino, I've not seen any women listed. So giving it up for my sisters: Amy and Emily of Indigo Girls Kaki King Wendy Woo Etheridge: that's a sig sound that goes back to a first album Ani D Michelle Scocked Meshell N'dgedecello Kate Wolf Leslie Helpert and some guys you missed: Steve Kimock Mark Karan Barry Sless Adam Ajala Billy Nershi (esp acoustic) Did anyone get Michael Hedges? Jerry Jeff Walker Bob Marley: gotta admit a revolution in island music from him Leo Kottke Don Conoscenti oh, folkie and acoustic junkie alert.
I got nershi, hedges, kottke, etc. I forgot about the indigo girls... they're quite great on guitar, mandolin, banjo, etc. Saw them before.
Welp heres what I got to say about it all. Everybody is keying in all these different guitarists and really they all play very different styles and so forth but are stuck in a very big blender of what we call rock guitarists. If you ask me I'd have to break it down big time. Best Blues Guitarists Best Rock Guitarist 1. Robert Johnson 1. Jimi Hendrix 2. Buddy Guy 2. Eric Clapton 3. B.B. King 3. Jimmy Page 4. Stevie Ray Vaughan 4. Keith Richards 5. Eric Clapton 5. David Gilmour 6. Albert King 6. Eddie Van Halen 7. Freddie King 7. Steve Vai 8. Hubert Sumlin 8. Ty Tabor 9. Robert Cray 9. Geroge Harrison 10. Jeff Beck 10. joe bonamassa I'm sure a lot of people could debate this list with me all afternoon but then again if you haven't heard some of these cats and your still listening to the old crap like Pink Floyd or Cream, or anybody from the late 60's early 70's I encourage you to broaden your mind a little bit with these new guy's on the block. True a lot of the old guy's are alway's going to be untouchable, but were are they now? Most of these guy's are in their late 50's or 60's and are being rolled out on stage in a wheel chair for the most part. These new guy's on the sceen are just as hip, just as creative, and maybe better then our old tried and true guitar hero's if you give them a shot, they are surely going to rock your ass!
My list(in no particular order): George Harrison Jimi Hendrix Eric Clapton Chuch Berry Pete Townshend Ravi Shankar(well, he was mind blowing on the sitar at least...) Brian Jones Keith Richards Duane Allman Jimmy Page Carlos Santana Robby Krieger Jerry Garcia
You might not want to admit it, but Mike McCready from Pearl Jam is amazing, given that he is self-taught.Tom Morello isnt very good technically, but he is insanely creative.
...I'm definitely seeing a lack of metal guitarists and way too much flaming. (This isn't in descending order. Just ten of the greatest.) 1. Dream Theater (Jon Petrucci) 2. Opeth (Michael Akerfeldt) 3. Shadows Fall (Jon Donais) 4. Slayer (Kerry King) 5. Iron Maiden guitarists 6. Megadeth (Dave Mustaine) 7. Death (Chuck Schuldiner RIP) 8. Morbid Angel (Trey Azagthoth) 9. Rusty Cooley 10. Metallica (Kirk Hammett) This is ten of the most technical, intricate, complex guitarists. If you're looking for influential, or groundbreaking, etc, the list would be a bit different.
