You do have to remember how long ago it was. Yeah, they may have been uneducated, but it was thousands of years ago!

So the people back then thought that the world was flat. How are you supposed to get them to follow you if you throw science facts at them?

Psst.. Hey guys, the world is round btw. You won't fall off tho, cuz of gravity.

Next thing you see are rocks being thrown at you, and some harsh words.

Heh, people are less likely to follow if you prove science? That's a bit stupid of them then, isn't it? :D

Religion is simple. As long as you look busy, wear a robe and have a wicked ass beard- someone is going to believe something you tell them.

There are no wrong questions, only wrong answers to certain questions.

That's like rule number one for time travelers, or aliens, etc. You shouldn't give out technology, or too much information to simple life forms. They have to figure it out for themselves over time.

....So? Isn't that exactly what the sun does, from a visual point of view? They just didn't know which moved.

agreed. It's not like people back then knew the earth was a sphere. It is metaphor.

Haha bible advocates are choosing which bits are literal and which aren't very carefully, with the only pattern being what suits them, as usual

Well the Bible is not a science book, but I'll try to explain this a little. Keep in mind that I find the NIV version of the Bible to be very misleading.

You used an Old Testament verse (written in Hebrew) and a New Testament verse (written in Greek). So often you have to go back to the original language because many of the words did not have a word for word translation to English.

"Corners" in Hebrew is KANAPH. It can be translated a variety of ways, but generally means extremity. The same word is translated to "borders" in Number 15:38, "four corners" in Isaiah 11:12 (your reference verse), and Job 37:3 and 38:13 as "ends'. There are many other Hebrew words that could have been used to mean a literal corner:

    Pinoh - means cornerstone.
    Paioh - means geometric corner
Ziovyoh - means "right angle" or "corner"
Krnouth refers to a projecting corner

The Greek word in Revelation is gonia. The Greek meaning is related to our geographic divisions known as quadrants. It is customary to divide a map into quadrants as shown by the four directions.

The writers were trying to convey that no place on earth will be missed.

    I hope this helps!

Well, when your stuck on religion Santa Clause lives at the north pole and delivers presents to ever child on the planet earth in one night. It doesn't matter if it is Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, or the other 500 religions. A true believer is so ignorant that they do not even know that they live in a fantasy world in their own mind. Ever try to talk to a Jehovah Witness? IMPOSSIBLE! :)

There actually are people who still think the Earth is flat:
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/magazine/7540427.stm

Ironically people have known the Earth was round since the day of ancient Greece just by following the stars and simple mathmatic formulas. Even in Columbus's days, the idea that his crew thought the Earth was flat and they were going to fall off it is something that became part of the legend in the 18th and 19th century. Columbus's men were afraid they were all going to starve to death that's why they wanted to turn back.
