It's a bit after pay day for me.

Went to a cop vehicle auction today - came away empty, but only went with 180. But then right afterwards I realized a dualy that's been sitting for 500 bucks for a few years, says "runs good" - I'd always thought it had no motor, but it's got a 454. It's a heap of total shit, but I think I'll try lowballing them. Regardless of what it's technically worth to somebody, it's a beat to shit work truck that's worth 180 (including title) to me - and it's a patch of useless asphalt that's progressively worth less as it rots, to them.

So, we'll see how that goes. I think I'll be told to kick rocks, but that'll be their loss, and no loss to me. If I get it that's super exciting and fun and useful, and if I don't, I get to smoke this month.

    I get paid every friday.

Cop vehicle aution? Never heard or been to one...

The new cop 'trucks' in this town have no painting on the side of the vehicles... and no tint!

Its weird... cause they changed the color of the rigs..they used to say 'protect and serve' then they said 'call 911' now they say nothing lol...

at least they have no tint so we can see if they damn looking at us..

    an auction tho?

    hmm

True that - theoretically. They'll probably cite that, in turning me down.

But it's a matter of the situation. Theoretical value is different from actual value.

This is the middle of the goddamn desert - it'd cost 180 in fuel, not to mention time, to haul it 100+ miles to a scrapper. It's got the 454, and they'll say that's worth something - but realistically, it's a piece of flaming shit that's had the hood open in the elements for years, it's probably got a billion and a half miles on it, it was a work truck and was treated like one (like shit, that is), probably bad oil changes and all the rest - probably has poor compression, and would need to be torn down, and new accessories, before going into an actually nice vehicle. Realistically, it's big and bad and fun, but still total shit.

And they wanted to sell it as a running truck, judging from the "1 ton" and "runs good" on the sign - as a running truck, it's got old mismatched tires all around, it looks like a cabnet bed was torched off (so, of course, no bed), half an exhaust, no rear window, hood totally bent in half, no grill... you know, the whole 9 yards.

It's not worth a dime if it doesn't sell, and it hasn't sold in several years. Couldn't hurt to ask. I might even go back with more money later, if they say no.

It was the sheriff's office impound auction.

Cars ranging from a few grand for pretty nice things, to 1g for a 99 camaro (nice looking ls1.... no key, so no tests, hence the price), to 75 bucks for a carolla. Considered that one, but no key or front wheels, and by the time I got it wheels and hotwired, I'd be exactly due to get it out of the lot, and it was auto, so I was highly suspicious of it's ability to move under it's own power on a strict time limit. Also, impounds with no key or partly stripped are going to have been abandoned on county roads, instead of seized, and thus, much less likely to run at all.

Oh, and there was a burnt cadillac for 4 dollars. THAT was a scrapper.

Cop auctions are usually impounded cars... A lot of them trashed.

cops dont keep cars here...towing companies run the impounds...after default shit either gets crushed or sent to an auction place that is separate from impound company

they dont let shit go cheap...if it needs keys they make some...they clean things too to get top dollar

They were pretty fourthcoming about what they had - got everything they could running, and made it clear what was in what kind of condition, what was a project, etc. It was the first I was ever at, I was mostly just scoping the type of scene it is, for when I've got more money.

And it's a small town, I guess they have to try a bit harder - apparently last time a bunch sold for absolutely nothing, and they didn't want to repeat that.

Most things sold for somewhere between a quarter and two thirds of their value, some dramatically less - nothing more than what it was worth.

It depends on the situation, here.

The city has an impound (for total shit left on street corners, usually, I think), the sheriffs office has an impound, and towing companies run their own. Where the car goes depends on the situation.

These are cars seized by the sheriffs office, many of them for drug or immigration reasons. They're kleptomaniacs.... if they see a sweet z28, they're taking that shit, which is just what they did.

Most of them had keys, from being taken during stops. Some of them, like the camaro, had obviously been dragged out of somebody's driveway as the sheriffs proceeded to totally wrongfully ruin their lives over drugs. Just a few nasty ones ended up there.

So yeah, there's a distinction between seizure and towing, and that's what determines who steals your car.
