Country music has gone to hell in the last 20 yrs. It's crap now. I like the Dixie Chicks though, they at least have the sense to oppose Bush.
I'm not a country fan, but you do have to recognise that Country has good and bad elements just as any other Genre does. I saw a top country band called Asleep at the Wheel recently at the Cambridge Folk Festival - it was all proper country stuff, especially instrumentation wise, but they had elements of rhythm'n'blues, jazz and even a bit of rock'n'roll there but all with an over all country flavour. Excellent performers there - and their front man (huge guy with a big pony tail looking like he'd come straight out of a western film) - had quite a voice - especially when he sang a nice big full powerful bottom C! Now as for crappy songs, of recent times, the one song that should never have got the airtime it has is that song "Life" by someone called Des'Ree - it's just the daftest song I've ever heard, with the possible exception of "I know a song that'll get on your nerves" of school playground origin.
Asleep at the Wheel play what is called "western swing". It's been around since before WW2, Bob Wills pioneered it and it's basically country with a big band added in the mix.
I live in Georgia so thats what almost everyone listens to including my g/f. Personally im a 311 man myself but i occasionally switch over and hear a good song (george strait, johnny cash, etc) but alot of the music now is all pro war, pro bush and i dont really think that just because we get attacked that everyone starts to play patriotic songs i mean if they really felt this they would have played it before 9/11
