It could be a movement to corral the whole archive into a centrally managed location perhaps to raise the quality standards and curb the temptation of profiteers.

Has anyone read any official statements on this development?

    This is all I found...

    http://www.ipjustice.org/CODE/barlow_stmt.shtml

    http://www.dead.net/hotline_info/NEW_DOCUMENTS/mp3.html

Back in the day, it was about meeting new people, making deals to swap shows and basically enjoying the ride. You had to actually put forth effort to obtain the goods. This aspect brought together a unique and special family of like-minded individuals. The whole environment and main theme of the musical story worked together well enough to build a following of historic proportions. The Grateful Dead was a fully functional and often dysfunctional unique subculture. It truly was a magical and organic entity.

Today, the internet enables anyone with fingers and eyes to whore onto something that is held sacred by many (myself included). As free and open spirited as the Grateful Dead were, it's not for everyone. If it were, maybe the world would be in better shape than it currently stands.

I personally don't think this change is a bad thing. Change has always been a priority of the GD. Deal with it by getting back to the roots. If you weren't there when the scene was in full-swing, don't take it for granted. IMO, you still have to earn it, barter for it, or simply pay for it one way or another. Not many bands of this influence and proporation give away their entire legacy. With progress comes growth. Unfortunately the GD is a corporation. The music is their core product.

    Edit:
scents&sublesou... In this 40th anniversary year of the band, why aren't the remaining members doing a big celebration show or tour?

    Hmmmm....
Phil's out there keeping it real..... while Bobby is... is out there... growing his beard... and eyeing little boys like yourself.

Keep on truckin'... just don't forget to keep reading... the signs as you're goin' down... the road.

Uhhhh.... for the record... Bobby spits

Im not gonna be one to point fingers right away at the band... seems like this is a move by the corperate offices.. fuck them... i bet they end up on dead.net or something as pay to download... this day in age... not many bands have control over what happens to their music... its all decided by the suits

Grateful Dead to offer entire catalog on iTMS
March 19, 2004 - 11:38 EST The Grateful Dead are finalizing a deal with Apple to make every live note they've ever recorded available for download from the iTunes Music Store (iTMS). "Everything, sooner or later, will end up being released on the Web," guitarist Bob Weir says. "What we wanna do is digitize our entire catalog, our entire collection of tapes and make that stuff available. I think iTunes is up to that." The band has recorded all of its live shows since the late 1960s. Weir says the Dead's jams are a bargain. "At 99 cents a tune, it's a pretty decent price, because most of our tunes are pretty long."
