Trump clinching the nomination early in the 2024 primary season helps portray him during his upcoming criminal trials as an already-won nominee who's being persecuted by prosecutors . It also shields him from the negative effect of active criminal trials that might have cost him votes later in the primary season that he might have otherwise needed to achieve the nomination.
How Trump is rewriting the GOP's rules to win in 2024 excerpt: “He is against rigged elections when they hurt him. He doesn’t appear to be against rigging elections to help him.” -Never Back Down founder Ken Cuccinelli on Donald Trump.
Trump's team reportedly has been demanding classified documents from Smith to try to show that foreign elements rebel-roused Trump's people which supposedly caused the riot at the Capitol and that, therefore, Trump can't be blamed for it. Inside the Trump Plot to Turn His Jan. 6 Trial Into a ‘MAGA Freak Show’ excerpt: "Attempts to drag Nancy Pelosi into court to berate her on the stand and, hopefully, on live TV. Claims that the Jan. 6 Capitol attack was an FBI frame job, with an assist from Antifa. Conspiracy theories that the 2020 election was indeed “stolen,” supposedly backed up by still-classified documents. Unhinged assertions that President Joe Biden is now secretly, personally orchestrating an unprecedented act of political persecution. Calls to publicly unmask the federal officials and lawyers investigating the former (and perhaps future) president of the United States. Efforts to blame any illegality on some of the ex-president’s closest confidants and former legal allies. Insinuations of election meddling by the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah. These are just some of the items that former President Donald Trump and his lawyers have been discussing and planning to deploy when he goes on trial for his efforts to steal the 2020 election."
More Trump trutherism. Inside the Trump Plot to Turn His Jan. 6 Trial Into a ‘MAGA Freak Show’ excerpt: "For the past several months, according to four of the sources, Trump has been demanding his attorneys incorporate an array of crank conspiracy theories about Jan. 6 and the 2020 election into their court filings and, eventually, performances at trial. His list of ideas has included asserting that there’s “evidence” that anti-Trump elements in the FBI “framed” him and MAGA protesters by using undercover agents and informants to instigate the deadly Jan. 6 riot; that anarchists and left-wing anti-fascists played a role in attacking the Capitol that day; and that Trump’s lieutenants had gathered real evidence showing “massive amounts” of voter and election “fraud” in 2020 in swing states and heavily Democratic urban areas, as he’s long baselessly claimed."
The Supreme Court could opt for a strict interpretation and rule that the 14th Amendment clause doesn't apply to the president. Court will ‘very swiftly’ reject Trump immunity claim, ex-legal aide says excerpt: "Schultz, a Pennsylvania lawyer who was an associate White House counsel, told CNN that lawyers for Trump would “make the arguments … that the 14th amendment does not apply to the president of the United States. “That is, there are a number of specific officials that are named in that section, one of them does not include the president of the United States. I think that’s going to be the basis upon which they make this appeal. And I do believe that the United States supreme court is going to agree with the Trump team on this one at least.”"
Grover Cleveland is the only two-term president whose terms were not contiguous. Trump’s courtroom and campaign trail collision is about to become a reality | CNN Politics excerpt; "Trump is determined to make an unmistakable statement by winning Iowa, after failing to do in 2016, as the first step in an extraordinary political comeback. It’s only been three years since he left Washington in disgrace after refusing to accept the result of the 2020 election and whipped up a mob that attacked the US Capitol in a stunning assault on democracy. Now, Trump – who faces 91 criminal charges – is well positioned to become only the second ex-president after Grover Cleveland in 1892 to claim a non-consecutive second term that would rock the country and the world. "
To date, Trump has nearly all of the endorsements from members of Congress. Biden and Trump are poised for a potential rematch that could shake American politics excerpt: "Many leaders in both parties are already convinced that Trump will be the GOP nominee. More than 90 House Republicans, 18 senators and seven governors have endorsed Trump. Haley and DeSantis have secured the endorsements of just six House Republicans, no senators and two governors combined.

Trump files bizarre, last-minute rant that claims absolute immunity again. Trump files bizarre, rambling reply in immunity battle image:
Meadows is asking for the full panel of the appeals court to reconsider the three-member panel's decision to not move his GA case to federal court. He could also appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court if the full panel agrees to hear the case and rules against him. Trump releases 32-page truth narrative about the 2020 election supposedly being stolen from him. It's the same worn-our truth narratives Trump has been propagating for the past three years. Excerpt from pdf file: "Countless irregularities emerged, including reports of ineligible voters, voting machine anomalies, “water main breaks,” improbable percentages of ballots for Biden, and more."

Opinion: The Supreme Court could make a Trump victory virtually impossible excerpt: "But that’s not the case at all in states with top elections officials who are Democratic-aligned. Elected Democratic secretaries of state include Adrian Fontes of Arizona (11 electoral votes), Jocelyn Benson in Michigan (15 electoral votes), Cisco Aguilar of Nevada (6 electoral votes), and Elaine Marshall of North Carolina (16 electoral votes). In Pennsylvania (19 electoral votes), Al Schmidt was appointed by Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro and confirmed by the state Senate (Schmidt is a Republican former Philadelphia city commissioner who Trump targeted for criticism in the aftermath of his 2020 election loss.)"
The conservative, originalist-interpreting supporters of Trump are in a bind on the 14th Amendment disqualification issue. They would normally be inclined to have a strict interpretation of it and let any issue be resolved at the state level (similar to the abortion issue that is now being determined at the state level without federal due process protections for women to have abortions). But Trump has been disqualified in CO and ME who used their state laws. MI also used its state law but didn't disqualify Trump and left it up to the federal government to determine if he might be disqualified. For those supportive of the rights of states over federal intervention, if they feel that the state laws are not giving adequate due process to a candidate, a legal debate can occur at the state level and changes can be made to state law to accommodate concerns. The GOP is promoting this type of approach for the abortion issue.
The U.S. Supreme Court could take an exit ramp on the disqualification issue by allowing a candidate to remain in an election but letting Congress determine post-election if electoral votes for a presidential candidate whose eligibility is in question due to accusations of being involved in an insurrection are valid. That would be an ironic approach to take considering that the now questionable eligibility of Trump stems from a riot he helped incite at the Capitol while he was trying to pressure Congress to debate and throw out electoral votes for Biden. It would put the issue right back in Congress to try to resolve, which is the venue where the problem started.
