Trump keeps claiming he’s immune from criminal charges. Will the Supreme Court buy it?

    excerpt:

"But never before has any branch of government said that a former president like Trump can’t face criminal charges for acts committed while in office — particularly if those acts fall outside his official duties. As the Supreme Court itself explained in 1974, no constitutional principle supports “an absolute, unqualified presidential privilege of immunity from judicial process under all circumstances.”

Yet Trump keeps swinging for the fences by claiming his scheme to overturn the 2020 election was an official presidential act; that prosecuting him for it would set a dangerous precedent for future presidents; and that if Congress didn’t already impeach and convict him for it, a court can’t convict him either."

    Faulty logic of Trump's argument.

Trump keeps claiming he’s immune from criminal charges. Will the Supreme Court buy it?

    excerpt:

"Trump doesn’t even believe his own immunity claims

“Trump’s legal claim rests on the premise that whatever Trump could have immunity to do, Joe Biden could too. … If he were really worried that Biden was abusing his official position and directing shadowy and improper investigations against his political rival, the former president wouldn’t simultaneously be arguing that Biden could and should be able to do so consequence-free.” — Editors, New York Daily News"

Trump already lost the fraud case in September when Engoron issued a summary judgement against him.

    Article from September 2023.

    https://www.npr.org/2023/09/26/1201893212/new-york-judge-order-letitia-james-trump-fraud-case

    excerpt:

"Engoron agreed with prosecutors that Trump and his associates exaggerated the former president's net worth in order to complete deals and receive more financing.

As part of his decision, Engoron ordered the business licenses of the defendants to be canceled in New York — making it potentially difficult for them to continue working in the state. He also ordered the continuation of an independent monitor to oversee the Trump Organization.

Trump maintained the value of his Florida real estate in his statements Wednesday.

"I am worth billions more than my very conservatively stated financial statements, and therefore could not have defrauded the banks, who all made money & were all," Trump claimed."

Sen. Mike Lee ‘wholeheartedly’ endorses Trump | The Hill

    excerpt:

“Look, whether you like Donald Trump or not, whether you agree with everything he says or not, he is our one opportunity to choose order over chaos and putting America first over America last,” Lee said while on The Ingraham Angle. “It’s time to get behind him.”

Giuliani and Trump accidentally called Sen. Mike Lee of Utah during the riot at the Capitol while trying to call Sen. Tuberville to see how he was doing at overturnign the 2020 election.

Lee had to take his cell phone back because he and others were being rushed to a safer place inside the Capitol as Trump's rioters approached.

Lee now wholehardedly endorses Trump because he says Trump is order over chaos.

Mitt Romney, the other U.S. Senator from Utah, didn't endorse Lee during the 2022 election.

Mitt Romney explains why he didn’t endorse Mike Lee in 2022 in new biography

    excerpt:

"Lee spent months, for example, trying to help Donald Trump remain in the White House even though he had lost the 2020 election. Romney felt those efforts contradicted Lee’s self-professed fealty to the Constitution. Romney muses in the biography that Lee possibly had convinced himself that Trump would reward those efforts with an appointment to the Supreme Court."

Maine man sentenced to two years probation in connection to Capitol riot

He wore a shirt with the name of his business on it. Someone noticed him and reported him to the authorities.

Sanford man sentenced to 2 years probation in connection with U.S. Capitol riot

    excerpt:

Ball, the owner of Broken Glass Co. in Wells, is one of eight Mainers who have been charged in connection with the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol. The riot began after former President Donald Trump refused to accept the results of the 2020 election and urged the crowd at his “Stop the Steal” rally to fight to overturn the election.

The FBI began investigating Ball in February 2021 after receiving an anonymous tip that he had been in the Capitol during the attack, according to an affidavit. In the following months, a second tipster and a confidential informant provided photos of a man wearing a black “Broken Glass Company” sweatshirt both inside and outside the building.

Smith intends to call digital forensic experts.

Prosecutors in Trump classified docs case plan to call digital forensics experts as witnesses

    excerpt:

"Federal prosecutors in special counsel Jack Smith's office revealed in court filings Friday that they intend to call several FBI employees as expert witnesses in their case alleging former President Donald Trump mishandled classified documents.

The filing listed five witnesses who are described as experts in digital forensics or cellular analytics, with prosecutors indicating they're expected to testify about the data and material extracted from devices and accounts belonging to Walt Nauta and Carlos De Oliveira, who were both accused of crimes alongside Trump. The experts are also expected to testify about extracted data related to the unnamed "Trump Employee 2.""

Article from December 2023 discussing how Jack Smith apparently has been able to extract useful data from the phone used by Trump and his associates.

Donald Trump "totally freaked out" by Jack Smith's latest move—Attorney

    excerpt:

"Writing on X, formerly Twitter on Tuesday, Litman said: "The bland disclosure of expert witness #3 by Jack Smith in the 1/6 trial has to have the Trump camp totally freaked out. Expert apparently can figure out thru Twitter data not just what Trump tweeted and visited but his physical whereabouts and others who used his phone. Gulp!""

Biden's campaign is hoping that uncommitted voters will eventually support him as it becomes clear that Trump will likely be the GOP nominee.

Biden campaign grapples with undecided voters who don’t yet believe Trump could be the nominee

    excerpt:

"But what’s impossible for the campaign to predict at this point in the election cycle is when exactly it will click for voters that “that guy” – Trump – is poised to be the GOP presidential nominee. Just 20% of the public has been paying a lot of attention to the 2024 presidential campaign, according to an AP-NORC poll from the end of last year; meanwhile, 47% said they have paid little or no attention."
