How Trump’s China Trade War Played Out in His First Term | FRONTLINE

    excerpt:

“What China did was move its exports to other countries and move its imports from other countries as well. So it shifted the purchase of soybeans, for example, from the U.S. to Brazil,” Anne Stevenson-Yang, founder of J Capital Research, tells Smith. “So that wasn’t a useful policy.”

After several tit-for-tat tariff increases, the documentary explains how the trade war, which continued into the Biden administration, actually increased the trade deficit. Cost increases also led to a decline in U.S. manufacturing jobs. Intellectual property theft continued. The costs imposed by tariffs were passed along to consumers of imported products.

Homan thinks Trump is going to wipe drug cartels off the face of the earth.

    excerpt:

Months earlier, speaking onstage at the Republican National Convention, Homan said Trump would designate Mexican cartels a "terrorist organization" for their role in getting fentanyl over the border, warning, "He's gonna wipe you off the face of the Earth."

    excerpt:

Some courts have ruled that Trump is exceeding his power, particularly in regard to tariffs, and appeals are ongoing. But Scheppele says the Trump administration expects a friendly reception if a legal challenge to the president's emergency powers reaches the Supreme Court — and it seems likely that it will.

"The point of it is to get the case to the Supreme Court when he thinks he's got a majority, to give him unlimited power," she says. "I mostly study the fall of democracies in other places, and it's through this expansion of unlimited executive power. I'm worried that's the path we're on."

    National emergencies.

    https://www.npr.org/2025/06/09/nx-s...rgencies-democracy-supreme-court-constitution

    excerpt:

"The United States is currently dealing with multiple emergencies at once, according to President Trump's administration. There's a national emergency at the southern border, an energy emergency and an economic emergency, to name a few — and the president has used these to enact some of his most wide-reaching policies, from pushing fossil fuel production to seeking to complete the border wall with Mexico and setting steep and sweeping tariffs."

    excerpt:

"The casualties include a lab at the University of Georgia that focussed on peanut-seed production and crop management, a potato-disease project at Penn State, a Washington State lab that worked on wheat, and the University of Nebraska’s research into efficient irrigation for small landholders in Africa, Asia, and Central America. The cuts also led to the elimination of an initiative at Purdue that studied how to protect food from illness-producing pathogens, at a time when the United States imports ninety-four per cent of its seafood, fifty-five per cent of its fresh fruit, and thirty-two per cent of its vegetables, according to a U.S. Food and Drug Administration report."

Trump praised the National Guard for quelling the unrest in CA when it had not yet arrived.

Los Angeles police arrest further 10 people on Sunday – as it happened | US news | The Guardian

    excerpt:

In a post on his social media platform TruthSocial, Trump said:

"Great job by the National Guard in Los Angeles after two days of violence, clashes and unrest. We have an incompetent Governor (Newscum) and Mayor (Bass) who were, as usual (just look at how they handled the fires, and now their VERY SLOW PERMITTING disaster. Federal permitting is complete!), unable to to handle the task.

These Radical Left protests, by instigators and often paid troublemakers, will NOT BE TOLERATED. Also, from now on, MASKS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED to be worn at protests. What do these people have to hide, and why??? Again, thank you to the National Guard for a job well done!”

However just an hour after Trump’s post, Bass tweeted: “I want to thank LAPD and local law enforcement for their work tonight. I also want to thank Gavin Newsom for his support.

“Just to be clear, the National Guard has not been deployed in the City of Los Angeles.”

In the mind of Trump and his associates, he's ten steps ahead of everyone.

In reality, he's ten steps ahead in his mind of what he thought happened that didn't happen.

Paramount is about 83% Hispanic. It was peaceful until Trump started the unrest.

Trump can't handle the problems he started in places like Paramount, yet he thinks he is he going to wipe drug cartels off the face of the earth.

Donald Trump Boasts of ‘Big Win’ Over ‘Fake News’ AP After Court Rules White House Can Ban News Outlet’s Access Over Its Refusal to Cite ‘Gulf of America’

    excerpt:

"In the ruling Friday, the appeals court disagreed. “Restricted presidential spaces” such as the Oval Office and Air Force One “are not First Amendment fora opened for private speech and discussion,” Judge Neomi Rao wrote in the ruling, joined by Judge Gregory Katsas. “The White House therefore retains discretion to determine, including on the basis of viewpoint, which journalists will be admitted.” Both of the judges are Trump appointees.'

    https://minnesotareformer.com/briefs/gov-tim-walz-calls-federal-raid-in-minneapolis-chaotic/

    excerpt:

"Gov. Tim Walz called Tuesday’s major law enforcement presence in south Minneapolis “chaotic” and said his Department of Public Safety had no advance notice.

“I think any professional, especially in law enforcement or the military, tells you you do not want chaos,” Walz told a gathering of States Newsroom editors Thursday.

On Tuesday, dozens of federal officers raided a taco restaurant in Minneapolis, drawing community members and activists in protest. The Minneapolis Police Department and Immigration and Customs Enforcement were among those present. MPD only assisted with crowd control, Mayor Jacob Frey said."

The real purpose of tariffs, is to create more profit for domestic businesses by the lack of foreign competition.
So if a 50% tariff is introduced, that allows local businesses to raise their prices as much as 40% and still be cheaper than imports.

Tariffs always make consumers pay more, while companies make much more. This is the opposite of free trade.
