Did you read my big, ole article?

    IT IS POISONOUS ~

whether it's ingested ORALLY, OR (even more toxic) ABSORBED through the skin.

And, for the most part, i think ranchers depend upon "stock tanks," what we think of as large ponds, which are filled with rain run-off from dry creeks (creeks that only run in heavier rains). After running through the foliage, then down a pretty long cut, it's pretty pure water by the time it gets to the tank/pond. Also, cisterns, that are like city water towers, that collect rain water (UNlike towers), and hold it, allowing any contaminants to "fall out," until needed.

It's more the food that the feedlots (and commercial ranchers) give the cattle to fatten them up that are the problem. Ah, but that's another Conspiracy Theory thread, i'm afraid... ;)

    I've just read it.
I could go with it being poisonous in large doses.
But, i'd still say it is beneficial to add it to the water supply.
    I'm a convert - sorry.

Well, even if the cattle do pee in the water, it has to filter through a good bit of earth before it returns to the aquifer that we're on, so again, it's pretty darned clean. (The County Extension offices will test it for you, for free, i believe.)

But, yeah, the tank is Actually a Pond, complete with patio, outhouse, storage building, porch swing, hung from the limb of a 1,000 year old (approximately) oak tree, a fishing pier, with ladder for climbing out after diving in, AND an outdoor shower, to rinse off after swimming. 'Nutherds, the cattle don't get within 50 feet of it! :D

They get fresh water from a trough, that keeps itself refilled to a certain level, that needs to be "over-flowed" every so often to keep it clean, and that needs to be habitable by koi/carp, to keep bugs and algae from taking it over between major cleanings (wire brush, elbow grease and water, at least twice per year).

The water is damned good, coming straight out of the ground, folks.

i HEARD that, "Drill, baby, drill!", Orison!!! :p

i meant the prob with the cattle ~ ;)

But, evidently, we ABSORB it, in HUMONGUS amounts, through our skin, so if you're bathing in tap water, you're being poisoned.

That's the bad thing for humans, and what makes the reverse osmosis filtration systems so cost prohibitive ~ in order to protect yourself, you have to install a WHOLE HOUSE system.

i knew about the fluoride ~ we used to vent our used water from the kitchen and washing machine out into the yard, but you can't do that with anything in the bathroom, including the sink (toothpaste), toilet (self-evident), and i wasn't sure about the tub, so it just went into the septic tank, too.

    Uh, oh, i gotta cheeze-it ~ Dear's home! ttyl

I know but I assume those cattle would be eaten?

Wow - a HUMONGUS amount.

You can get a bit nuts about a lot of things if you have the time.
Although, perhaps -I have no evidence to support that - large doses are a poison... I'm not going to change the habits of a lifetime though.
I can get worked up about a lot of things but flouride in the water is not one...as there is nothing we can do about it...unless you distinguish between naturally occuring flouride or man made flouride...would you say natural flouride is ok?

It occurs as a mineral, so, sure, it's just fine with me ~ as long as my water supply is away from it.

Yeah, i exaggerated, but if it's WORSE than ingesting it, and you do THAT with more water than you drink (please, say you DO! :p), then, imho, that constitutes a HUMONGUS risk. Just saying...

I don't get you though. You say you: "It's fine with me", but then you say you don't want it near your drinking water.
Surely after hundreds of thousands of years of human history we might have seem some adverse affects to the substance that makes up most of our body.
I could fathom the idea artificial flouride is not as good for you as naturally occuring flouride... but you seem adverse to all forms of flouride...which basically means all forms of water.

If you are suggesting lots of American are rising up about the affects of water, then Americans are more bloody crazy than I first thought.

I reckon evidence is getting a little mangled here.

    Odon,

Fluoride accumulates in the body, so over time it adds up and it does have an adverse effect, especially on the developing minds of young children. That's why doctors often advise parents not to give fluoridated tap water to babies in their first couple years of life. Heck, there is enough fluoride in fluoride toothpaste to kill a child, which is why on the back of the tube it says to contact poison control if more than a pea-sized amount is swallowed.

Recently, Scientific American magazine published an article based on studies confirming fluoride's adverse affects on the brain (as well as the teeth, bones and thyroid gland).

    http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?id=second-thoughts-on-fluoride

Most people are not even aware that the first documented use of fluoride in drinking water was by Hitler at the concentration camps. Obviously it wasn't to keep the prisoners' teeth from decaying, but rather to keep them docile and submissive. Now you can better understand the real reason for them putting fluoride in the water, as well as the fact that it is a waste product of the aluminum industry. It would cost them lots of money to dispose of it the proper way, so they just put it in the water instead.

Yes, most water does in fact contain certain amounts of natural CALCIUM FLUORIDE, which is not nearly as toxic as the chemical SODIUM FlUORIDE they add to the water and toothpaste.

Yes I do. Last time I checked milk has calcium in it, which is good for the teeth and bones. Has that changed recently? Sorry I don't see what point your trying to make.

Flourides "beneficial" effect is suppose to be topical. Thats why its in toothpaste in which you brush your teeth with. You apply the toothpaste to your teeth. You don't swallow the toothpaste, and have your body absorb the nutrients in which it uses to prevent tooth decay, such as the way the body would absorb calcium from milk to strengthen bones. In fact it says specifically on the bottle not to swallow it, with good reason. Its poisonous.

Just because you don't fall ill immediatley to something doesn't mean its not dangerous. Cancer can take years and years to develop before it actually becomes a problem or even noticeable. Like rat said it accumulates in the body over time, like many other toxins and creates problems.

I accept that the levels of flouride acceptable to younger children and babies is different to that of adults.
But I don't think you would find many doctors who would say that a child should not have some flouride.
How the populous gets the right amount is controversial, yes.
Like I said: "perhaps - I have no evidence to support that - large doses are a poison".
I'd most deffinitly watch how much of most things my child had running around their system.
The fact that in large doses it is bad for you and deadly for small children does not make me overly concerned...as a large dose of nicotene could kill an adult...as you say it is the cumalitive effect.

    Your first paragraph made sense.
This is just not ringing true.
I do accept very large doses could have adverse affects and perhaps was used by Hitler.
This - in my mind - does not relate to the miniscule amounts that have been used in the last 60 years.
Neither does it mean that is the reason governments put it in our tap water.
You do have to ruin a perfectly reasonable answer with a half baked idea somewhere amongst it - don't you.
    Sorry.
Perhaps you are right and I've been over flourinated...;)

It's not even about the "miniscule" amount in the water. That's like referring to the miniscule amount of uranium or arsenic in water. No amount can be good for you. The fact is that with tap water, toothpaste, and other products made with fluoridated water, people are consuming far too much fluoride, which lowers people's IQs and leaves them susceptible to bone and thyroid cancers. It doesn't just affect young children, but it affects them more than someone with a fully developed nervous system. And for the record, too much fluoride is bad for the teeth. It causes white discolorations called fluorosis. Many young children have this condition. Studies have been conducted showing that many cities with non-fluoridted water actually have less incidence of cavities. There is no real evidence suggesting that fluoride prevents cavities. There is more evidence suggesting that it damages the teeth.

Most medical books warn about giving fluoridated water to babies. Whether some doctors don't, I can imagine this to be true as many people (including doctors) have swallowed the propaganda that fluoride is good when it's a toxic poison.

Now, I know now you have fitted your opinion into your post here.
There is more evidence flouride is beneficial.
But, you are right to suggest too much flouride is bad for the teeth.
The fact that this part is true and the fact that too much flouride can kill you has seemingly made people a tad neurotic.
Yes, idiots will have (and have) heared that doctors say (and have said) some flouride is good and then interprete that as "flouride is good full stop" and then not worry about the dosage, is their own fault.
Much like some adults hear red wine is good for you and not worry about the amount of units they consume.
In the ideal world people would have the right dosage of everything and be within acceptable levels.
    This simply does not occur.
Neither do vast swathes of people suffer from flourosis or drop dead because thay have had too much flouride.
The reasons people drop dead of cancer are multi-faceted and I imagine a consequence of our modern life.
Heck I read Australians have a higher propesity to die of certain cancers because they use a BBQ...fancy mounting a campaign to stop Australians using their BBQ?

We have to take note we live in a risky world and we need to be careful.

True, there is fluoride in most American-made beers. However, my fluoride intake is still extremely limited compared to most people who drink soda and tap water on a daily basis. I drink beer only once or twice per week. There is no way to really totally avoid all fluoride, you can only limit your intake. A lot of the excess fluoride people receive comes from the toothpaste. While it is not swallowed, the fluoride is still absorbed through the lining of the mouth. This is why I use a fluoride-free toothpaste.

I'm not talking about the flouride content, I am talking about the effects of over consumption of alcohol..which is also a poison if taken to excess or abused over a period of time. I hear you drink a fair bit.
