Okay, here's my take...

1. Adu hasn't improved every year he's been with DCU, he's improved practically every month. Go back and watch his debut game and them watch him a month later--totally different player, totally different.

2. Some people got so hyped up on his public comments that they assumed an unhappy Freddy is the same as a stagnant Freddy or one who is unimproving or that Adu knows best what will improve his game.

3. I think Adu is much improved now than he was several months ago. He's even better this year than he was at the end of last year year.

4. I don't think it's his breakout year--absolutely not. For those of us who are fans of the game in the US and support the USNT, Freddy Adu has NOT shown that he can seize a game by the scruff of the neck and make it his. Yep, we can all point to clever moves or nice bits of skill that we look at and go "man, in my dreams I couldn't hit that ball like that." But name one game where he's just seized control, taken over the match, scored the tying and winning goals? He hasn't--not once in his career. In fact, he hasn't even done it in reserve play! Doesn't mean he won't. But he's not there yet. And thus he hasn't had his breakout year. B/c for me, a breakout year for Mr. Adu is when he learns to exert his considerable skills so that it decides games and does so in a decisive way.

The USA doesn't have a lot of super skilled players. Landon Donovan is one. But this past WC, Donovan was the opposite of a difference-maker: he disappeared in games (granted, on the world's biggest stage!). So to say that Adu has had a breakout year b/c he's shown a lot of skills and hey--he's scored 2 goals (one of them in a friendly), doesn't do it for me. Right now, at a significantly lower level of play, Adu has not once had a game where he's dominated the game and owned it. He's had a bunch of games this year where he's played well. He's had some games where he had a magnificant play that made a difference. But he's not at the point as a player where opposing teams first figure out how they're going to stop him or put their best defender on him or just seek to contain him. B/c he's not good enough yet to deserve that kind of attention--b/c he hasn't had a "breakout" year yet.

People have got to be patient with Freddy Adu. Even Freddy has this problem--think of all of the hype he also added about wanting to be part of the 2006 WC team. When you look at how difficult Donovan found it, how poorly Beasley played offensively, it's easy in retrospect to see that Adu wasn't ready. Maybe a Euro team will buy him come next transfer window or maybe MLS won't sell. Certainly Freddy has visions of grandeur and Euro glory. And I think and hope that he will indeed become a great player and a "difference-maker." But he's nowhere close to that now. He's just a talent with a lot of potential who is starting to become good at his position and is capable of amazing us with the stuff he does at times in games. He isn't even close to being able to consistently influence games in ways that make him the fulcrum. Anything less than that would be a disappoint for the USA--it would mean a very skilled player who makes skilled plays but isn't the guy you can build a team around, carry a squad, consistently make key plays or make the difference when it counts. So let's give the guy a break. Right now, he's a very good soccer player with a tremendous upside. For me, a breakout year for Adu is when he becomes more than just a talent with an upside and instead becomes a player who consistently makes a difference on the pitch.
