Oh, that's right up my alley! I love a fruit or spice flavored craft beer. Not overly sweet, just subtle fruit.
Mikkeller is experimental, too, and they have brewpubs all across the world, including Japan. There are a handful of experimental European breweries, though overall Europe has less craft breweries altogether in relation to it's size. That is slowly beginning to change, however.
Chewy pertains to the body of a beer in terms of thickness in mouthfeel. However, that person clearly does not know what they're talking about as Westbrook or any other gose is not chewy. They are light-bodied and crisp. A stout might be defined as "chewy", but not a gose.
I am not drinking at the moment since I have to work tonight, but I have good stuff lined up for the weekend, including some Heady Topper, Crusher, and the two new IPAs released from Upstate last week. I also have a bottle of NE-style IPA from Rochester's Three Head's bottled just three days ago. Tomorrow I will be going to one of the local brew pubs as well.
I feel like this is a sin, but I couldn't even get through one can of Heady Topper. I just don't like IPA! I try to get a taste that bitter hoppiness, but I can't seem to do so.
Yeah, some styles are not for everyone. Everyone has their own tastes. Me, personally... I am not a huge fan of boozy imperial stouts. I drink them from time to time, but I don't really seek them out. At the moment NE-style IPAs and sours are my favorite styles.
Ballast point California Kölsch. I got a 12 pack of the Ballast point Sextant collection. It comes with 4 Sculpin IPAs, 4 California Kölsch and 4 Piper down scottish ales. Not a bad variety pack for only about 17 bucks.
I'm not sure how i feel about this New Holland's Dragon's milk. It goes down smooth but has a bite of bourbon at the end.
Indeed. I've decided i like it but probably not enough to drink more than one in a sitting...er, session? This gose, on the other hand, is quite sessionable!
The Dragon's Blood is a very average imperial stout. For me to drink an imperial stout it has to be really good and not overly sweet and boozy. The Westbrook Gose, on the other hand, is one of the best of its style. Love that beer. You should try the Key Lime Pie Gose they make, which is even better.
Yes i am really liking the gose. I like the simplicity of it; it has a very nice balance of tartness, salt, and a very faint sweetness. I will keep an eye out for the key lime pie, i actually remembered you recommending it when i saw the westbrook selection tonight but they didnt have that one unfortunately
It seems like after receiving Heady Topper in the mail from YFM back in December, I all of a sudden have fairly easy access to it. Then again I have also recently joined Facebook and am a member of a number of beer trading groups, which gives me access to beers I might not be able to obtain without going to the actual brewery. But I can definitely say that Heady Topper, one of the most acclaimed beers made in the US, is overrated. Don't get me wrong, it's a great beer, but it doesn't really live up to the hype it receives. Focal Banger is better, but there are better beers than than that, too, by breweries even better than The Alchemist (which is still top-notch). There are so many awesome new breweries out there, and new small batch craft breweries are coming into existence everyday.
I am drinking Simcoe / Amarillo IPA from Upstate Brewing Company out of Elmira, NY. This was released just a week ago at the brewery, along with their New Zealand IPA. This is Upstate's first beer brewed with lupulin powder and is brewed with Simcoe and Amarillo hops. I got this through a trade via Facebook. 6.4% ABV Pour a dark, hazy orange color Aroma is of candied orange, tangerine, peach, apricot, some sweet caramel malts, some herbal notes and a faint diacetyl. There is a sharp bitterness at the front of the tongue with a dank, resinous hop flavor that is coupled with flavors of juicy citrus (namely tangerine), as well orange and grapefruit rind. There is a spicy, herbal character, some caramel, a slight buttery diacetyl-like flavor similar to the aroma, and a sweet but bready malt backbone. Mouthfeel is medium-light, very smooth, creamy, and with a soft carbonation. I am really impressed with this beer. Overall rating: A (93-95%)
