Local beer store had shock top ginger beer on sale $8. A 12 pack. Top 10 worst beers I ever had. Tastes like they plucked the ginger out of the ground and put it in the wort without cleaning it. They also had the lemon Shandy for that price but with a 4% abv...I like having some buzz when I'm chilling playing games. Last one on sale was the apple crisp whatever. At least I know I like that one because it was in a variety pack I got one time.
Drinking Whirlpool from Night Shift Brewing out of Everett, Mass. This is a pale ale coming in a 4.5% ABV. Pours a hazy yellow-orange color with about a finger's worth of head. Nose is of lemon, orange zest, tangerine and lemongrass with some faint cracker-like malts. Flavor mirrors the nose very much with an upfront citrus zest consisting of lemon and grapefruit rind. Lots of grassy, earthy hop flavors as well, with a bready, cracker-like malt backbone. Mouthfeel is light and crisp with a fairly vibrant carbonation. Overall an awesome session pale ale. Highly drinkable, and very crisp and refreshing. Rating: A-
What an incredible farmhouse ale from Grimm. Very dry, spicy bite to this beer. I am getting lots of citrus rind in the flavor, coupled with some green apple, melon, black pepper, and a fair amount of funk. Light bodied, crisp and refreshing beer with a very dry finish. 5.5% ABV. Bottled February 2017. A
What does a fair amount of funk mean? Like you want to plug in the disco ball and dance the night away, orrr does it mean it tastes like the space between your toes?
Funk to me means an acquired taste that despite having every style of beer and liking an extremely wide range of beers. It is a nasty taste that is best left for swill.
Wrong to both of the above. Funk is a term commonly used to describe farmhouse ales, or beers which are brewed with brettanomyces yeast, which contribute a funky flavor that is somewhat sour and somewhat spicy with elements of horse blanket. If you have ever had a wild ale or saison, you would know what I mean.
Some of the beers I am drinking tonight... Revive by Upland Brewing Co (Bloomington, Indiana) - a sour ale brewed with peach... 6%ABV Mastodon Mother Puncher by Mikkeller (Denmark) - a wild IPA with brettanomyces and passionfruit.... 6.6% ABV
Now drinking the newly-released Thick Mint from Southern Tier. This is a dessert imperial stout brewed with chocolate and mint from the brewery's Blackwater Series. This beer is allegedly modeled after Thin Mint Girl Scout cookies. 10% ABV. Pours a pitch black color with a tan colored head. Holy shit, the aroma of this beer is nearly identical to Thin Mint Girl Scout cookies. I mean, this smells EXACTLY like Thin Mints!! Flavor is.... wow..... incredible!! Holy hell, the taste matches the nose perfectly. Again, this is like Thin Mint cookies, but with some coffee flavors as well. The sweet, dark-roased malts combine beautifully with the chocolate and mint to create something that is outstanding. Mouthfeel is full-bodied, kind of slick, creamy and oh so smooth. This beer gets even better as it warms. Truly an awesome dessert beer from Southern Tier! Definitely one of my favorite Southern Tier beers to date and is on par with their Choklat. A+
I am impressed. I would let it warm up a bit, though. I am not saying drink it warm, but maybe leave it out of the refrigerator 20-30 minutes before drinking it. Imperial stouts are always a lot better when they're not super cold.
Well, hells bells. Here y'all are on page 208 and I'm back on 202! (Granted, I'm apparently set at like 10 posts a page, so... yeah...) Anyfuck... I'm drinking tonight. (No shit, really? ) Let me slap the info down so I can get back to catching up on this thread. Aaaand... GO! Beer #1: (Alc. 15%) Smell: Subdued hops and malt hugging each other close. An aura of honey throughout. But I don't really smell blueberries. Taste: Smooth honey smoke. A slight alcohol warmth in the tail end. As in smell, it's very subdued in taste... but still don't taste the blueberries. Overall, this is a smooth, thickish, somewhat creamy honey ale. The subdued smell and taste hide the strength this brew possesses, in a really pleasant manner. Highly enjoyable!
I know y'all have moved on from this already, but I really wanted to be part of this fun little query! My fave country for beer is... um... well, now that I think about it... maybe I shouldn't have bothered answering this after all. There are so many great brews from so many diverse locations, there's no way I could pick just one country! Right now I'm drinking a beer made in New Jersey, USA. But, my other two beers I bought tonight are from Belgium and Scotland. (I hope to love them all.)
i bought one those Mint ST.. was very good.. I was expecting a few mint burps later but nothing, didnt taste like left over xmas or pumpking, boozy wasnt present nor the onion aftertaste some ST beers seem to have.. thinking i wish I got two. but Ive my Guinness extra Sunday nite special going for me. 4 beers in.. but may call it a night soon dst may play havoc on me tomorrow, hasnt yet..
