And then it was 2020!!! HUZZAH!! Welcome to the first beer review(s) of the year! It's a set of 3 beers I chose for their amusing labels. Beer #1 is this blonde sour ale: (Alc. 5.5%) (D9 Brewing - Whiskers) Smell: Sour orange with a hint of wet hay just behind it. Taste: Strong tartness, lightly orange. A thought of wet hay rests in the distance. Overall, it's definitely a sour brew! Or rather, tart... very tart. Almost as if tartness was the flavor, instead of the style. The orange is like very watered down orange juice, which actually may work to make this a more light-hearted brew. Not bad. . . . And a picture for this? Hmm... ok... one sec. Ok, here's the best I found for this one:
Well Named....."Whiskers" Sure Looks Like A "Sour" Old Cat.......I Wouldn't Mess With Him.......Oh..And While I Have You On The Phone........All The Best For 2020 And I Hope You Continue To Contribute To This Website....... Cheers Glen.
Thank you, Glen! I'll be sure to keep periodically leaving reviews, at the very least. And I hope your 2020 is fabulous!! And that Whiskers was really, REALLY sour/tart. To be fair, it was a bit much by the end.
Also... it's time to move on to... *derpy version of Superman music plays* *durr dur dur dur dur ... durr durr durrr ... durdurdur durdurdur dur dur durrr* Beer #2! (Alc. 8%) (Three 3's - Super Flirp) Smell: Candied citrus and stone fruit. Dry hay soul. Very distant pine. Taste: Grapefruit and nectarine up front. Hay soul in-between. Dry pine on the back end. Overall, this is a rather pleasant IPA with a classic flavor profile applied in good measure. Nothing is too sweet, bitter, or anything. Just done fairly well. Pretty solid brew. ... As for the pic that usually goes down here... Fuck it, I'm not even gonna try with this one.
And then there was 1. (Or should I say 3?) pfft I should say, let me drink my fuckin beer. Beer #3: (Alc. 12.4%) (Abomination - Midnight Snack) Smells: Smooth mocha coffee grounds and cacao nibs, lofted by sweet oaty malt. Tastes: Agreeable espresso with thoughts of vanilla, lilting on a river of sweet oaty malt. Overalls, this mostly follows standard milk stout tropes. But, it does them very well and produces a pleasantly smooth imbibement without the strong boozy element some lesser brews have exhibited. . . . In other news, I easily found something to post with this. And so... y'alls related pic is:
Peek a boo! Time for some more beers! Beer #1: (Alc. 7.5%) (Beach Haus - Interstellar Blues) Smell: Standard full bodied, smooth IPA... with lactose. Taste: Dry faint pine bitterness with a distant tart bite, accompanied by a faint wisp of vanilla and lactose. Overall, I'm disappointed. It's not a bad beer, I just don't really taste any blueberry notes in it. Mostly it's just a nice (even if dry and unimposing) beer. - No pic here because it's all ridiculously inflated/engorged blueberry women. The next beer should work just fine. But for this... not so much.
I'm hopeful for a better experience with this brew. So, trepidatiously, I'mma move on to... Beer #2: (Alc. 7.3%) (Fat Orange Cat - Sweet Jane Strawberry) Smells: Soft pine and strawberries up front. Vanilla fades in to a soft crescendo of a dry finish. Tastes: Laid back pine introduces subdued strawberry. Both easing into a full, smooth finish. Overalls, this is a very pleasant brew. Probably one of my favorites from Fat Orange Cat thus far. Even though not mentioned specifically, the milkshake angle is definitely present. Makes me want to try the other Sweet Jane flavors! And I know I said I was going to add a hottie pic here, but I changed my mind. I can't help but include something way cooler...
I'm pretty good at not paying attention, but always ending up with about am hour between beers. With that said, welcome to... Beer #3! (Alc. 10%) (Flying Monkeys - The Chocolate Manifesto) Smellerin- Woah... that's chocolate. I mean, that's just a lot of chocolate. Layers of delicious chocolate. Tasterin- It's a chocolate stout. Not a coffee/chocolate stout. Just fuckloads of chocolate. ...with a warm stouty back end. Overallerin- Fuck yes. Chocolate for miles. Drink this shit. And you've been so understanding and patient. So, with that in mind... I imagine I owe y'all. I owe y'all a hottie. So, here ya go... The Chocolate Manifesto hottie:
Only one week and I'm back already! How you doin lovelies? Good? Good. Tonight should be kind of a big night for me. It looks like I'll be officially opening my store in Second Life!! (which really just amounts to putting things up for sale in the store that's been there, unfinished, for years.) And when I say "years", I mean I started this project in 2010! (If procrastination were a superpower, I'd be muthafuckin Superman) ANYways... that should be happening later. But first... BEER! So, let's do it. Beer #1: (Alc. 6.5%) (Jughandle - Background Radiation) Smell: Vanilla, pine, grapefruit and stone fruit? Taste: Subdued stone fruit intro, with soft pine backing strengthening throughout. Slight grapefruit foundation. Overall, not a bad brew. It's thicker in body than I expect of a NEIPA, but about normal in taste. It's largely a standard NEIPA brew, but has a distant quirky personality trait (hay?) that I can't quite hammer down. . . . Aaaand... as always... (and with a fun smirk) "THE" pic:
Don't fret over timing. I started broadcasting pirate radio in 2004 and only figured out how to score a buck from it a few months ago.
Thanks, I appreciate the camaraderie. (Of course, by your schedule, I would've had the store open 10 years ago, but hey... [insert something positive]!) What kind of stuff do you broadcast? And can I listen to it somewhere?
Yay me! I'm under an hour since the last review! Beer #2: (Alc. 8.5%) (Cape May + Left Hand - Ties The Room Together) Smells: Roasted malt and faint vanilla introduce fleeting thoughts of chocolate. A half-hiding coffee note is sustained all along. Tastes: Creamy vanilla coffee on a half-hidden bed of chocolate. Overalls, this is a pretty pleasant brew! It's smooth and easy to drink... like how a white chocolate mocha latte is smooth and easy. Slightly boozy at times, but nothing to worry about. ... And, um... So you know how I usually put some kind of hottie down here in the related pic? Well, it's not.. um.. quite the same this time. It's related and all. It's just not some scantily clad hot thing. But it's still awesome. I mean... how could I not use this?
I started out at 7 watts and now push out 25. It's plenty for this 3 traffic light town. I've been sharing DJ duties with a buddy for the last decade. Several times we considered going legit, but it seems that option is only open to churches and millionaires. Living in the shadow of Atlanta makes that painfully obvious. Radio stations here SUCK. They are literally better in Montgomery Alabama than Atlanta Georgia. Nearly all of the massive stations have stupid morning shows and hosts who should have retired 20 years ago. Out here in the wilds of west Georgia, there is no radio for local matters. If we wanted to advertise a local event, we'd have to pay heavily to advertise it on one of the 100KW Atlanta stations. I originally started broadcasting because I wanted to hear the music I liked. We gained a little popularity and used to take requests and such via burner phones. When I started commuting again, after 20 years of NOT commuting, I became keenly aware of the utter bullshit that is Atlanta area radio. That's when my buddy and I hatched the plan. Instead of broadcasting from the garage as we have been doing, we are shifting to 2.4 GHz as an uplink signal. The receiver will be in a metal box, on a pole that holes the antenna and a solar panel. It receives the 2.4 signal, in stereo, and rebroadcasts it well below the standard for LPFM at 7 watts. This only covers a couple of miles. BUT, with the UHF signal pointed due east, we only need to put a repeater up every mile and a half or so to cover the entire I-20 corridor from the Alabummer border to the I-285 circle around Atlanta. That's a LOT of commuters who are just as sick of Atlanta morning shows as I am (one of the radio personalities is called "Sea Bass" of all stoopid DJ names). For the moment, you can only hear the station in Villa Rica, a town with lots of fast food places and toxic soil. It's the testing ground for our first stand-alone repeater and it has been working brilliantly. It uses a Chinese MP3 player on a timer that's set for 6-9AM, 11AM-1PM and 5-7PM. Inside are two 12V 14AH batteries which are charged by the solar panels. We plan to add a small wind generator to keep the batteries from going completely dead. But for the moment we're just testing to see how long it will run before we start having electrical issues. We're also testing the heating system (some 12V light bulbs and a mechanical thermostat that kicks on at 32F to keep the batteries from freezing). The UHF equipment arrives from China soon, so I'm making the first repeater on my kitchen table now. It will enable me to use the 25W transmitter on top of the hill instead of at the bottom, behind my house. I'm disguising it to look like a utility SCADA station near a retention pond. From the top of the hill I should get close to a 6 mile circle. We have 2 rag papers in this town, so we plan to broadcast a lot of their shit just to make the community value obvious. They print things like softball schedules and bake sales. Stuff the Atlanta stations won't touch. Of course, the real problem is being tracked down by the radio police (FCC). While their mandate doesn't usually put people in jail (they mostly just confiscate equipment), it's still a legal issue I don't prefer to deal with. Thanks to precise music and dialog scheduling, the station sounds normal. We only lack call letters. The repeaters look like they will cost around $600 each, so growth is kind of slow at the moment. However, advertising money is starting to come in. My partner has been making cash deals for underhanded advertising. One is a show called Midday Munchies that discusses which restaurant they'll be going to, between bong hits. We also bitch about which car shops suck and where the speed traps are. As for the music, anything goes. I've mixed in songs I got while I was in Africa and I've been digitizing my 70s album collection as well. Otherwise I have a collection from the 80s to today in MP3 format. You can hear us around exit 24 on I-20W. While I realize people expect to be able to switch to a station anytime they like, pirate radio is not like that. We have to keep limited hours as well as moving the transmitter around and rotating frequencies. It's a pain in the ass, but so far I have not had any odd knocks on the door. There's a hill by the high school I occasionally broadcast from when I don't want to do it from home. Ok, time for bed. Wife returns from her Florida trip in the morning.
Well, on to my last beer of the night. Maybe. At least the last reviewed of the night for sure. Might have another later... but after this current... well... here... Beer#3: (Alc. 12%) (Evil Twin - Even More JCS) Smellins: Vanilla bean and black coffee in a blanket of sweet malt. Tastins: Black coffee lowlighted with smoky vanilla, within a blanket of sweet malt on a bed of biscuits. Overallins, this is as tasty as I expected. Although it's overly sweet on this outing, it still has an Evil Twin soul. Not my favorite from them, but that doesn't mean it's bad. (But as is the case with most higher ABV brews, don't gulp... this is for sipping!) - Now, I know I should include a pic to go along with this beer.... but... I don't know. What do I pair with this? hmm maybe this is good?
Wow! I did not expect so much info! That was awesome to read about!! Of course, now I'm also thinking about pumping up the volume and wondering if the high school has the initials, 'HHH'. But, regardless of early 90s movies references, it sounds pretty cool. I won't be able to listen in any time soon, but I hope you keep having a good time with it!!
It's later. I'm thrilled about this. But also tired and heading out. But first... this is what I've been talking about. Some crappy t-shirts in a crappy store in the best virtual world I know. Formally introducing... Bang Rumpus!!! ok goodnight
