Ok, I'll be catching up after I make this post. I was just done with that last beer and now on to my second. As such... (Alc. 7.5%) Smells like: Strong hops, pine and grapefruit. Possible coriander. Tastes like: Strong pine, familiar hops bitterness. A bit of a deeper soul than a usual IPA. And somewhere, almost like a faint memory, a slight woodiness. Overall, it's pretty good for the IPA that it is. A bit bitter for my taste, especially in the lingering vapors.
I'm on page 52 now... taking a bit to catch up. (Got sidetracked by YouTube and another dog walk.) In the meantime, here's #3... (Alc. 6.7%) Smell: Relaxed hops, caramel malt, subtle overall. Taste: That's odd.. does not taste like an IPA, that's for sure. Slight bitterness mostly from hops, but a hint of charred wood and a bit of pine. Overall, another tasty brew. Deeper and heavier than most IPAs. Just kinda odd though.
I found a very expensive import tonight. A long neck of Woodstock special blend. A touch stronger than regular.
I've noticed there's at least a spare few of us who are interested in trading beers or something. And I can't help but wonder where we all are located, generally speaking. Like, is it feasible to suggest we setup a beer meet-up at some point? Obviously, I wouldn't expect everyone to make it (but would love it if they did). But... Thoughts? Hip Forums Beer Convention 2017?
The NJ micro scene has definitely grown. Granted, I'm Jersey Shore area, which is decidedly not North Jersey.. but still... (I wouldn't be surprised if we have better micros outside of the city-ish areas in northish Jersey.) I've been considering trying to get a job at Beach Haus. I'd probably fail at getting it, but... I like the idea of working at a brewery.
Oh shit. If you're able to trade Grimm for something... I just MUST find something you'd trade for! Maybe I'll just take some pics of the shelves at the best place I have for micros and specialty beers and post them here. Seriously, that shit sounds SO. FUCKING. AWESOME!
I'm in california. I know theres quite a few members who live within a reasonable distance from me but not any from this thread
Well, shit man. Let's get an all out convention going. A casual craft beer convention. With Hip Forums as the main host. Because fuck yeah.
Oh yeah! Also... beer 4... (Alc. 6%) Smells: Refreshing orange, lemon and hay... I think? Almost like a candy... with a slightly bitter, piney voice calling from the distance. Tastes: There is a surprising sweetness to this IPA. I'm going to go with faint hay and orange/lemon peel as the main drivers, with the gentle hops as a co-pilot. Overall... an interesting brew. I've seen this a million times and always thought I wouldn't be a fan to any degree. But, honestly... I could see smoking a high-brow blunt with this to very pleasant results.
Unwinding after work, drinking a beer that literally just hit the shelves yesterday. This beer is so new there is not even an entry for it yet on BeerAdvocate or Rate Beer. This should be extremely fresh, having been bottled only a week ago on 12/21/16. This is the new 2X Oak'd IPA from Southern Tier, a double IPA brewed with maple syrup and aged with oak chips. 8.2% ABV Pours a nice, deep copper-red color with about 1/4 inch of creamy off-white head. Up front on the nose I am getting some sweet, caramel malts combined with dank and resinous hop characteristics. I am getting notes of cherry, oak, some faint maple syrup, and a slight booziness. I am getting some citrus rind (orange, lemon, grapefruit), as well as some spiciness. Overall a very sweet nose for an IPA. Also flavor-wise, this is on the sweeter, maltier side for an IPA. This sweetness could also be partly attributed to the beer's use of maple syrup. The sweetness is almost more pronounced at the front of the tongue, with the hop character coming through more towards the middle and finish of the beer, lending the beer a certain degree of dryness. The hops are predominately of a pine resin quality, coupled with grapefruit rind, with a well-defined woody, oaky flavor coming through in the finish. The mouthfeel of this beer is on the lighter end of medium with a slight stickiness. The carbonation is also on the lighter end of moderate, and the beer finishes predominately dry with the upfront sweetness being cut towards the middle of the tongue by the hops. Overall not a bad offering from Southern Tier, but it doesn't hold a candle to a lot of the IPA's I've been drinking as of lately. Overall rating: B+ (87-89%)
Got a 6 of han shot first from evil genius beer company. I always get any star wars themed beers I can and display a bottle in my bar. It's a double IPA with a strong alcohol taste. Little citrus in the smell but barely a hint of it in the taste. Nothing good about this one but nothing bad about it besides alcohol flavor in an 8% beer. Not unheard of but with the weak other flavors you would think it would have a weak booze taste too. If I wasn't looking at the label I would have thought it was a wheat beer with a shot of vodka or half a shot of everclear added.
Just picked up a growler of Roll Call: EC3 from Gun Hill Brewing Co. This is an IPA coming in at 7.3% ABV. Pours a hazy (cloudy) golden orange color with a small amount of head. Aroma is of intense tropical citrus fruits. I am getting lots of pineapple, grapefruit, peach, mango, and a touch of honey. There is a light caramel and bready malt sweetness coming through as well. Flavor is of juicy tropical fruits with, again, lots of pineapple, grapefruit and mango predominating, along with some sweet bready malts and honey-like sweetness towards the middle of the mouth. Mouthfeel is light-medium with a rather soft and smooth character and restrained carbonation. Very nice IPA here! Overall rating: A
I ordered a Highland Oatmeal Porter with dinner, one of my go-to beers And I thought of this thread as I was drinking it and tried to analyze the mouth feel and stuff. But i couldnt do it lol So to sum it up, it is a pretty good beer
Earlier this evening I had Cube Cuvee #2 from Grimm on draft at Joe Bean Coffee Roasters in Rochester, NY. It is a blended, barrel aged sour ale consisting of saison aged two years in barrels previously containing Fee Brothers orange bitters, and golden sour ale aged six months in neutral oak. Pours a slightly hazy orange-gold color with no head whatsoever. Nose is of tart lacto sourness as well as some slight funk, coupled with a good amount of orange and orange zest, as well as some slightly herbal notes, too. Lots of orange and sour lacto flavors, some mild herbal characteristics, and a slight amount of funk. Mouthfeel is light, super soft, slightly sticky, and with a very low level of carbonation and a moderate to high acidity. Very, very nice sour from Grimm -- one of my favorite sours to date from them! Overall rating: A
While at Joe Bean Coffee Roasters I had another beer on draft as well. This is Growl by Off Color Brewing. This is a Belgian-style quad coming in at 8.5% ABV. Pours cloudy, dark mahogany with a small tan-colored head. Aroma is of banana, clove, brown sugar, prunes, sweet malts, caramel and Belgian yeast. Flavor is sweet malts with dark fruit overtones of plum and raisin along with Belgian candi sugar, grass, and some earthy yeast. Mouthfeel is light-medium with a moderate level of carbonation and a sweet, lingering finish. Overall rating: B+
