I lied before. I guess this will be my final BIG beer of the night, and a BIG beer it is. This is the highly acclaimed Michigan Maple Jesus from Evil Twin, an imperial stout aged in maple syrup bourbon barrels. 12% ABV. Pours a deep, dark black... the color of motor oil. There is little to no head on this beer, as is common with high ABV beers. Aroma on this beer is very boozy, with lots of bourbon immediately noticeable upon first whiff. Lots of dark, intense malts, maple syrup, dark chocolate, caramel, molasses and roasted notes. Again, very boozy nose. Flavor is very sweet, with the alcohol well hidden for its high ABV and boozy nose. The alcohol shows most in its warming mouthfeel as well as the buzz. Otherwise this is a very sweet dessert beer made for sipping. LOTS of sweet malts along with undertones of caramel, chocolate, cocao nibs, coffee, oak, vanilla and some maple syrup. It is like drinking alcohol-infused candy. Mouthfeel is slick, sticky, and full-bodied with little to no carbonation noted. The alcohol provides a good amount of warmth going down. Overall an amazing barrel-aged imperial stout great for an after-dinner treat, and certainly not intended for mass consumption. Overall rating: A+
Was at a bar in nj that are known for their beer selection. They had some fruit beer that was 16%. I went with backwoods bastard and a local chocolate stout.
Meh... I leave my longer reviews here and the other forum I frequent. I leave short versions of them on UnTappd. (Plus, I like getting the badges.)
(Bummer... that means I missed PR.) Hello everyone! Just a quick pass through. Not sure if I'll really be drinking tonight or not. It'd be mixing mediums and I'm not sure how safe it'd be. I'll have champagne (Korbet Extra Dry) at midnight. Maybe sip a little at the Barefoot White Zinfandel my kids girlfriend(?) brought over. But I doubt I'll break into the Lolita (2015) I bought tonight. (Alc. 8.7%) From the website: Lolita is a pink rose colored Belgian style pale ale fermented with wild yeast and aged on raspberries in wine barrels Aromas of fresh raspberries, bright jammy fruit flavors and crisp, refreshing body make Lolita ideal for beer drinkers fond of Belgian Framboise.
Enjoying a few beers at The Beer Market here in Rochester while I wait for the girlfriend to get her nails done. Had a Lagunitas Dark Swan, a sour, and am now drinking Citra Bomb by Sloop, an IPA. Reviews pending. The Beer Market is one of my favorite venues in the area for beer. They have 50 beers on tap, all of which are outstanding, plus a couple hundred beers in bottles. Located near the University of Rochester.
been to the tap house in seattle a few times. just looked it up to remind myself because the last time i was there was over 4 years ago. they advertise 160 beers on tap. i can swear when i was there it was over 180 but still it is usually a 10 minute reading of the beer menu before i decide what i want when i go there. crazy thing is the last time i was there i sat next to a guy from orisons way. and being i have a few friends in the area i knew all about it. so we sat and talked about the burg for an hour or so while enjoying beers that i will never remember because i had a habit of ordering things that sounded good but i never heard of before.
Now drinking Coco Baked Oatmeal Stout from Sloop Brewing out of Elizaville, NY. This is the draft version poured from a 32 oz. growler. 5.5% ABV. Pours a black color with a small tan head. Aroma is of dark roasted malts, chocolate, caramel, coffee, vanilla and coconut. Flavor is of roasted malts, coffee, chocolate, coconut, caramel, a hint of vanilla and some slight spicy undertones Body is light and a little too thin for the style, but overall quite good. It is smooth and with a soft carbonation. Overall rating: A-
Rogues Hazelnut Ale.. I dont have much to offer outside my normal beers I suppose... first night Ive got t drink alone since xmas eve.. Im enjoying it..
I am now drinking Kaffee Cafe Koffie from Swiftwater Brewing out of Rochester, NY. This is billed as a "coffee infused Belgian style tripel ale" This beer is brewed with coffee from Glen Edith Coffee Roasters, also out of Rochester. 7.9% ABV. Pours a hazy straw color with a faint head. Lots of visible effervescence to this beer as the bubbles cling to the side of the glass. Aroma is of coffee/espresso and little else. There are perhaps some grainy notes, coupled with some earthy hops, but the coffee aromas take center stage. Like the aroma, the coffee takes center stage with the flavor is well. Unfortunately, there is little in the way of subtlety with this beer, and the overpowering coffee flavors and aromas allow for little of the beer's other nuances to shine through. The body is light and with an overtly vibrant carbonation. Definitely not worth the $6 this bottle cost. Overall rating : B Meh. Very meh.
Word. I become skeptical of places with more than 50 taps because the turnover becomes far less and beer tends to sit in the lines far longer than it should. I will take a place with 20 top-shelf drafts anyday over 100 mediocre ones.
So, I'm not planning on getting all wasted tonight. (Have to be up early tomorrow.) But I just HAD to try this Lolita I got. (Even if I only got it to get the Sour Sisters badge on UnTappd). Anywhoo... Here she is... (Alc. 7.8%) Nose: Wet hay and raspberries, wafts of sweet malt. Perhaps a touch of honey and wood. Mouth: Sour berry. A bit of wet hay and sweet malt. Again, a possible touch of honey. Overall, really quite sour... the kind of sour taste that makes you think something has gone bad. Like an over-ripe honeydew with raspberry drizzle or something. Not my favorite style and I'm guessing not a great example of a sour, as the bite seems to be overtaking the whole of the mouth. (Adding: The more I drink it, the more it tastes like maybe it's supposed to taste this way. Also trying to decide if there's any "horse blanket" to this smell/taste.) Maybe not a sexy-sexy image, but fitting nonetheless... . And here's the review I left on UnTappd: Wet hay, raspberries, tannin bitterness. Honey and wood seem to waft about. Not sure if bottle is of, but has more bite than I expected.
drinking warlock from southern tier, i didnt buy it for myself but i am out of beer and dont feel like driving now. if i still want something i will walk to the local later. i thought it said orange on it but its a pumpkin stout. explains why i was pleasantly surprised by it. i can smell the pumpkin now that i know what it is but it was disguised enough by the taste that i didnt give the smell much though. the taste is all good once again i get the pumpkin now that i am thinking about it but in a blind taste i would never pick it out. the dark side of the stout changes that flavor enough that when i am just sipping and not thinking about it,,,i dont even notice the slight notes hidden in it.
I think I might end up having a drink or two tonight. Not positive. Not sure why i'm sharing that info either. But, there it is. While I'm here, I may as well leave a treat of some kind. (I just have to find one... gimme a sec...) *** ok, I'm back. Here ya go... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2YllipGl2Is
Well... I did not end up having that drink. But I did now! Granted, I've already finished it. (But I have more. ) But this was my first brew of the night: Troegs Scratch Beer Series #262 Chocolate Stout (Alc. 7.1%) Smells like: Dark chocolate, hops riding side-saddle on the malt. With the scents being fairly faint overall. Tastes like: Bitter dark chocolate (and some hidden wood chips) with a semi-sweet malt wrapper. Overall, a pleasant brew. The bitter elements drift on the edges, while the dark chocolate folds over the edges and a bright smoky wood slips through the middle.
aaaand... time for #2. (Which is almost empty at this point.) (Alc. 4.2%) Smell: Caramel, bright hops and a bit of cracker. Taste: Slight caramalized malt. A hint of sunshiny fields in the hops instead of bitterness. Overall, a gentle session brew. Would be great on a warm sunshiny day. I know it's called "Brawler", but for the life of me I can't figure out why!
