I don't know. I sort of slept, but the impression that I got was that there was an ongoing narrative that I didn't care for by Portman. She was narrating the events of the assassination and the events surrounding it. It may be that it's very good and I just was out of it.

I didn't watch half of it. The main character isn't a very cool guy. The time in which the beginning of the movie takes place is during an era that didn't offer much to women in terms of economic equality. It depicts the wife of the guy as very dependent and therefore unhappy. I didn't like that aspect of it. Some redeeming qualities were seeing the success of the initial franchises and parts where the marriage did well. But overall the first half of the movie feels like a little bit of a downer. Again, I probably didn't give it a fair enough chance, but I was tired, so... meh. :)

I liked it. But also thought if people like good westerns and think this is an original and great setting and premise they ought to find themselves a copy of The great silence

The story was different enough but the inspiration taken from it is clear. Besides, that one was (is) more original and even harsher

It bombed at the box office in '48 but I thought it was well done. The atmosphere was really different, they used actual canvas over the lens in some shots to make them look like paintings. It was very expensive due to on location shooting, and the color tinting. One scene took over ten days to film, but it was deleted.

The final picture of the portrait was in full technicolor and the painting was one of David O.Selznick's prize possessions. BTW Selznick married the women who played Jennie.

    Beautifully done movie.

Yes, that is what I meant. Did I forget the word movie?

Wow, I cannot believe this movie bombed at the box office at the time. It must have been a movie before its time....as I do find it timeless.....

How interesting that Selznick married the actress portraying Jennie. Who could blame him? lol

I love the artist flavor that was woven into the plot , of course....

i think I find the movies from the 1940's most heartful and probably my favorite movies of all time......

I love watching the movies from the 1940's, most of all, I think..

I was thinking what a great remake this would be. If done correctly.

I saw Will Penny on DVD the other day. One of the most down to earth westerns I have ever seen. I might be wrong but I cannot think of a previous western that had a major female role. The end was not typical pf Hollywood at all for the time. These days it does matter if issues are not completely resolved and they do not necessarily live happily ever after.
