Sorry, but that's just bollocks. Just in Adelaide there are 5 gun shops, and over 50 000 licensed firearms owners in my state. Perhaps you should check the facts before making statements next time. Criminals get them where criminals have always got them. From other criminals.
Rat Don’t call people stupid – you can say that in your opinion they are ill informed or such but just calling people stupid isn’t nice.
Another mass shooting and another gun thread, what’s this the fifteenth or so such shooting in the last 12 years? Anyway I’ve discussed this at length here and elsewhere and heard all the arguments and I’ll still ask the same thing – why do so many Americans feel so frightened that they feel they need guns to defend themselves (from ‘bad people’ or the ‘government’)? And I’d put forward the same theory which is that it seems to me that many American attitudes towards guns is that they seem to see them as a way of dealing with or as a means of ignoring many of the social problems within their society. It also seems to me to have led to a belief that threat and suppression is the best means of defence. And I’d make the same observation in that it seems to me that the desire for guns as a means of defence is both a sign of and cause of a dysfunctional system. In that if people were not afraid of the society they lived in they wouldn’t feel the need for a gun but once they have a gun they can feel they don’t need to correct or tackle the problems with their society that made them so frightened of it to begin with.
Well, I'm sorry but I just don't care anymore and can't help it. Not having guns won't change anything, and having guns won't change anything. In fact the whole argument will just distract from a more fundamental problem - there will probably always be people wanting to kill other people and nothing we can do about it. In fact, I'm surprised you still care at the age of 50. How the hell do you do that?
Maybe not who they kill, but the killers are the right wingers. i.e. OKC Fed building bomber, Gabrielle Giffords shooter, and even the movie theater killer because liberals are against the use of assault weapons. All of the Aryans and KKK are right wingers. Face it, right wingers are just violent nut jobs.
Defense Unfortunately, we live in a world where there are bad people who commit violent crimes. If I were to come face to face with such a person, and they threatened my life or that of a loved one, I think I would want to defend myself rather than simply allow myself to be killed. I am not even a fan of guns, and I don't own a single one. However, people should have the right to defend themselves. Your apparent belief that all Americans are obsessed with guns comes from the media and not firsthand experience. I doubt you have even been to America.
Balbus, Which problems are you talking about, specifically, that make americans so frightened? And how do you propose the average citizen correct those specific problems you're talking about?
Don't call people stupid. That's mean. Hide your insults with clever and condesending remarks as asked.... And the nazis were not trying to kill the two biggest members of the allied forces. In fact they had no beef with Britain or America at all. That is un till we stepped in their way.
Fear is a liar. Name them. We can weed them out and nip this thing in the bud. This is an imagined scenario and not a genuine threat. There is no defense against anyone's eventual demise. The fact is, not gun, nor fortress, nor prison has kept us safe. Fears premise is follow me and I will keep you safe, but it's real intent is to keep you from going where you will and to wound your heart.
Wow... the nazis wanted to take over the world. Russia tried to play nice with them and lost about 20 million people because of it.
You are misinformed. The nazis were smart....crazy but smart. They knew they didn't have the resources to take on the entire world. Their goal was to build a greater empire across eastern Europe and Russia. They wanted to become a recognized empire that could compete with Britain, French, and American Superpowers. And the loss that Russia took by "playing nice" only helps to prove the point rjhangover and I were trying to make.
Currently I don't have a lot of money because I have gone back to school. But when I graduate and get a good career and a steady income, I am going to buy a few guns as well as membership in the NRA. One thing we need in America is more law abiding citizens with concealed carry permits.
