Calm down. This is one of the good parts in life but you're too busy trying to diss me with the cliche insults of 12 year old girl.

Is it not reasonable to assume that anything going on in the underground that was actually good would still hold at least some rep to this day? That I might have heard of them? And like I said, I've perused the music collections of various housemates and found almost nothing but shit from the 90s.

Are you also afraid to name names because deep down you know that I am right, or that this is an argument that neither of us can win because it ultimately comes down to taste (or in the instance of a member of generation X: bias)?

    Well fucking enlighten me.

Hip Hop, Rave Music, Country, Experimental, World music etc. etc. sucked and lacked vision, originality and depth. Everything I have heard.

Sure, as soon as you cite a qualification you have that convices me you can claim ' lacked vision, originality and depth'.

    Do you like Britney Spears?

You're just being moronic now. Cough up some evidence or forever hold your peace.

Bonnie Prince Billie's first album sucked because it was made in the 90s.

Early 90s soul and rap was cool, there was a lot of good music with some real meaning behind it, it got shit at about '95, the fucking techno era, everything was techno, techno and britney spears, that's all there was.

Gangsta's paradise - coolio, best song of the 90s.

I dont have to. You still havent nailed your original point. To claim all music sucked because of what you have heard is ... well... dumb.

Remember this isnt about my opinion, its about yours. and your lack of experience to make such a (wholesale)claim.

So it is completely unreasonable to have the opinion that music in the mid 90s hit a creative slump despite the fact that I have gone out of my way to sample a miriad of recordings from the early 1900s up until now?

So essentially, I can't base an opinion on anything I know because my knowledge is (according to you) limited, which pretty much negates the worth of holding any opinion whatsoever.

I honestly thought you were above that kind of wishy/washy, evidence lacking, manipulative logic that some people like to utilize here when trying to prove a point.

If Nirvana was the hallmark of 90s music, then popular 90s music sucked. Until you can offer me evidence that 90s obscure music didn't suck, I'm going to assume that it did because everything I have heard so far is in my opinion, crap. I'm really lost on how that isn't a reasonable supposition.

By the way, isn't it reasonable to assume that when I say that 90s music sucked I may only mean "in general", or are you too literal minded to be able to read intentions?

Manipulative logic ? I went with what you presented, which was limited, you have only just now begun to try and up your knowledge cred, rather late to do so I might add.

    and now......

"If Nirvana was the hallmark of 90s music, then popular 90s music sucked."

You never mentioned anything about hallmarks....

Whats what you opened with...nothing about 90's music sucking, it was good music that died.

now as for your argue....the idea that good music died because 'grunge' became popular is odd. Lets not forget the style was around before the label was applied while we at it.

and for the last time. stop going with this underground/obscure point, I havent once tried to argue that such music is/was good. I have tried to point out that just becuase you havent heard any of it that you like, do not mean music sucked/die when grunge became popular.

    focus.

If you listen to artists like Mazzy Star and Radiohead in the early to mid 90s you'll notice that their music is filled with fuzzy, overdriven guitar riffs, characteristic of grunge music. It seems that a lot of the artists of the era weren't really pushing boundaries because it was "ok" to just whack out a loud distorted riff and pass it off as music. I blame grunge because that is pretty much what grunge was about. Even Nick Cave's murder ballads seems to lack the spirit of his earlier/later albums.

Yes, grunge was around before it became popular. Yes, there was also crap, uberdistorted music in the 80s, but there was also The Smiths, My Bloody Valentine, The Beastie Boys, New Order, XTC, Billy Bragg, The Triffids, The Go Betweens, Public Enemy, Joy Division (until late 1980), Cocteau Twins etc. most of which were kind of stylisticly lame in one way or another, but they had some sort of originality in spirit which most 90s bands lacked (Its also fair to note that some of these bands went on to make great music in the 90s, alongside Beck, Snog and Nick Cave which I forgot to mention before)

As for the underground/obscure point, you said:
I kind of assumed you were saying I was wrong because I had only heard popular artists.

If what I presented was limited (which is one of the main crutches of your argument here) it is because I was only attempting to list good artists. If I haven't listed any bad ones it is because they were, in my opinion, too numerous to mention and too crap to be worth remembering.

If I was to start a list I would begin with Alice in Chains.

Thats all I'm going to say on the matter. Its getting obssessive.
