rats are a lot more intelligent than most people realize. They even learn their own names.

    ooh ratty talk ^-^
my sister currently has 4 girls, we've had about 13 or 14 over the last 8 years or so =]

rats are way clever! the old cage we had had sliding doors, and the rats learnt to push the door open and get out

I love animals...and I am sorry, I just couldn't live with a rat. I don't think I could keep my dogs from eating them anyway. My sister had two guinea pigs. She left her door open on accident and the dogs ate both of those. The only thing we found was lots of blood.

our cats dont even bother with the rats anymore. when we first kept any, they were all over the cage (the rats used to pull the tails in thru the bars and bite them..) and we had to shut the cats out of the house when we cleaned the cage etc, but now theyre just like 'oh.. a rat..' and thats it =]

i prefer girl rats over boys.. boys are whiffy

    I prefer boy rats

We currently have 3 boys and 3 girls. Girl rats always seem to be more troublemakers and less loving, at least from all of the ones we've owned.

I hear guinea pigs are delicious. That's according to andrew zimmern and he pretty much thinks everything is delicious. Looked good on TV though. Me and SL were talking about eventually raising guinea pigs for meat.

Why eat guinea pigs when you can probably get more meat from other animals?
I had one rat who ended up getting massive tumors in her lungs and had to be put down. Never again, was the saddest thing.

Because they are more sustainable. They eat my left over veggies and I eat them.

I could never eat my guinea pig! Fred is way too cool to be dinner. I love the way he chirps and makes his crazy noises everynight when I make dinner. He gets louder & louder until I toss him some fresh veggies/fruit. He loves bath time and plays in the water.
IMO eating guinea pig is like eating cat or dog...some cultures do it, but I have bonded with too many of them to ever look at them as food.

re girl rats: ours like to push their box down the ramp at about 1am =| they like to nibble my fingers to see if im eatable, but theyll happily sit on my shoulder and stick their nose down my ear

re boy rats: we had two boys in a cage once, and one bit a hole in the others stomach, and they pee everywhere, and they just smell

re eating skiddly bids: i would. its just meat afterall, i bet itd be quite nice. and if you raised enough, youd have a pretty constant supply too

dont think i could eat a cat though..

and re lumpy rats: i think all of ours with the exception of 2 had to be put down due to tumours, its very common in ratties =[

In my opinion, meat is meat... I could never see eating any living thing that I've befriended, but if I don't know you, you're fair game ;)
It's like the paradox of me having pet rats and then having a pet snake whom I feed rats too... the basic concept is I don't care if she eats rats, as long as they're not rats that I'm friends with.
I think I'd happily eat dog, cat, maybe even human if the opportunity arose. I never got the entire "eating domesticated animals is disgusting, but "wild" animals are okay to eat" thing. Seems a little silly and brainwashed to me.

on the subject of guinea pigs... I've always though they look like rabbits with short ears... I'd imagine they'd taste kinda like rabbit.

I had the opposite problem... boy rats are sweet... will sit on our shoulder's calmly and listen when we tell them to do something. Girl rats won't stay in one place when we try to hold them, nip at fingers, don't listen, and ate their mom about a month after they were born... just woke up one morning and there they were chowing down. My wife still holds that against them (the mom was her fav) so she doesn't like the girls very much anymore.

I rather like you so far 73N5H1, though your name is a bitch to type out. I'm glad you are willing to admit you may eat human if the opportunity arose. Not many people have the balls to come out and admit something like that. I always said, if I had a limb removed in some form of accident, I would save it, BBQ it and have a bunch of friends over for a feast. Unfortunately I think I'm the only one that would partake.

I have a tendency to look at the bigger picture of things instead of the small narrow perspective that's usually forced on us socially.

I think I'd have a taste... probably wouldn't chow down so to speak, but my curiosity would definitely make me want to try it. I'd imagine we taste like most other red meats... beef etc.
