I feel as if the term "un-employed" does have some sort of ignorance around it. The term definitely does not define the person, just clumps them into a similar group for people to ponder at.
My Dad was "laid-off" , un-employed, 1 year before his retirement, he was no means a bad worker, bad person, lazy, stupid, he was punctual, had strong bonds with his co-workers. The problem was that the people making the decisions, not doing the work, the lazy fucking dick heads who think signing their signature and putting as much brain-work into a proposal as their children do as finger painting constitutes a $89,000 salary had to save some money and privatize.
My Father then had to explain on each application his reason for leaving, explain that it wasn't due to bad merit on his part. That not only messed with him in the economical, job hunting side.
It messed with his emotions, a man in his 50's, worked his whole life, now no idea what to do, only knows what he ever did for the last 30 years. It wasn't that he was worthless by any means, he has so much to offer anyone, he is a genuine person. Yet, he felt anxiety over his self-worth. It is hard for some people to respect themselves because they can't just say "fuck it" to the prejudice and discrimination.

Treating unemployment as a negative thing is discriminatory, the term unemployed isn't though. That is because our societies are (supposedly....) based on the ethos that we earn our keep through employment

I do think that you could argue that it is to some extent becoming outdated with the amount of unemployment, self employment, casual labour etc etc
