The worst band ever

Relevant to who/what? You I guess. In the 90s and onwards a lot of metal fans rejoiced in other subgenres from power metal and prog to black, gothic, stoner etc. etc.

Today, in 2018, rock songs almost never get anywhere close to the top 10, whereas from the 70s to about 1993, hard rock and heavy metal regularly topped the charts. It's an incredible failure to market the music. "Hair Metal" never deserved to get pounded. Those bands had talented musicians who actually practiced and played cool, catchy songs with balls and energy. Musicianship in popular music went down in many ways after the 80's, all the way to the pathetic state that it is today. At least hair metal was fun. The thing that sucks about grunge is that its after-effects still permeate rock music today. It sucked out all the energy that made rock music exciting. Modern rock bands still take themselves too seriously because of grunge, with the depressing songs, somber lyrics, boring vocals, and bland rhythm sections . Its like bands are afraid to just have fun and rock out with a catchy tune laced with piercing vocals, crunchy riffs, and blazing solos. Rock was never better then at the 80s/early 90s when Heavy Metal bands were ruling the world. Music is shit these days.....talent is minimal at very least. Shitty talentless Nirvana somehow destroyed rock music. SHitvana was just the record companies pushing a new sound to exploit brainwashed top 10 idiots to buy more albums. Of course many people think Shitvana was anti mainstream but how in much of an error are they.
Trust me any 6 month old guitar player can play any Shitvana song ANY!!! and probably compose a shitty chord proggresion of their own with that skill. I like to see any shitvana fan play something that takes some skill other than power chords and nasty monotone vocals

 

Wow. That's really saying something. Most of grunge was a bit crap. But Nevermind is a brilliant, addictive, exuberant and uplifting album. The musicianship is top-notch, and it was totally new.

I've never seen someone so passionately defend the merit of Hair Metal before. I initially thought they might have been trolling but these posts are way too long for that.

 

Grunge had to happen to deliver us from the insipidness of disco. Of all the things us Boomers did to the world Disco was the most inexcusable.

The argumentation is unfortunately often pointless though, when preferences and personal taste are posed as objective truths and absolute facts.

We agree once again. Nevermind is the only album of Nirvana i really dig. I also appreciate that Alive song of Pearl jam. But both bands and grunge in general are not spend well on me.

 

I hate the new depressing rock and metal too. People whining about how bad their lives are. I don't blame grunge for that, though. I think people just saw grunge that way and then tried to cash in on it. Grunge never struck me as depressing music, but throw one downbeat song on an album and everybody thinks you're moody and interesting. There were plenty of bands of the era, though, that didn't have any depressing music at all as far as I can tell. The Breeders come to mind.

New rock and metal is basically the hair metal of today. Music made by rock stars who just want to cash in and get chicks. It doesn't matter what they're singing about, just as long as they're rich and famous. Maybe they just found a bigger market in the angsty teen department. Who knows...maybe most people just like to pretend that they're victims. But the bands put on the costumes and sing the songs that make money just like hair metal bands used to do. Hair metal bands have probably tried writing all deep, interesting material but failed miserably. Nirvana were successful at it because Kurt was a creative genius. Others were successful at it. It isn't easy to do. You have to actually be deep and interesting. Most musicians that try fail.

sinead you act like singing about sex and money should be really interesting subject matter to people, but that's what we've got rap for, I guess. Nickelback did do that "Hey Hey I Wanna Be A Rockstar" song, which was pretty close I guess.
