actually, Pluto is mostly ice, methane, nitrogen and carbon monoxide....... but they do think it might have a rocky core

wow this is generating quite a controversy......... I think there are those that believe in perserving history and keeping pluto as a planet..... just because it has been a planet for 76 years.....

    madcrappie,

Whatever happened to the CalTech discovery of a tenth planet which they (meaning nerds) codenamed Xena after the tv show Xena, Warrior Princess (btw If any of those nerds even saw a pussy they'd probably faint) but that's beside the point......

If their proven correct then we're back to 9 planets

keeping it simple? if they now have two different categories (planets and dwarf planets) how is that more simple?

that "planet" falls under the same category as pluto. its pretty much the same makeup as pluto. there were 3 more "planets" that the IAU was going to name as planets, and that included xena.....

in order to be classified as a planet according to the IAU, it has to have a regular orbit, much larger than pluto, and have at least some of a gravitational pull........

I don't know but I'm not lying. Maybe I just heard someones opinion or something though- like before it was official?

I know I heard though a long time ago that by definition and criteria Pluto is not a planet because I remember telling people about it.

well, yeah, theyve been contemplating it since the 90s.......... but now its official, and the former planet will be removed from textbooks........

I guess the widow of the discoverer of pluto is all shook up about the news....
