I dont understand tourists that come and say you orsies are all so friendly. Huh? Dude, you living in a parallel reality or something, Sydney especially, there are all self entitled wankers. It sticks out the most when you are overseas, you can hear the accent a mile away, they are usually always loud and / or drunk, just embarrasing I have in the past put on a fake accent so fellow aussie tourists especially dont talk to me Somewhere like Hawaii though, where 2/3 of the tourists are either japanese or chinese, another 20% australian, you are kind of screwed in the service industry. Either they cant understand you if you try explain tipping or they'll look at you like you are asking to donate to charity I think she is half australian Which brings us to; in a country that has the tipping model, shouldnt service be better. This company is saying with higher wages/ non tipping they get a better retention rate, better trained staff. On the opposite side of the argument a handful of whiners on tripadvisor means....what exactly? Is the service better in a country that uses the tipping model? Shouldnt the service in bars and restaurants be far superior in the US?
We Don't Tip In Australia.......Here We Pay Workers Their Correct Wage.......No Need For Tips Unless The Service Is Above Excellence..... Cheers Glen.
I dont know, the whole job market here is a little bit weird. Minimum wage is 14 an hour or so, but there is a sliding scale between 15 to 20 years old, 15 yr olds get 50% of adult minimum wage up to 20 year olds getting 90% of it So you walk into a McDonalds here and all the staff will be either teenyboppers if its 6pm or fresh off the boat if its 2am Another curious thing is we dont really have restaurant chains here, go out to dinner its going to be the privately owned thai/chinese restaurant or the 5 cultures in one noodle shop thingy. 20 years ago we had the dine in pizza huts and the Sizzlers, but they all disappeared, they dont work here. Whether thats in part because of the tipping thing, or cultural, who knows. But are Australians are used to not caring about the staffs salary. Fast Food on the other hand, think we are slightly worse than Americans with that, they are everywhere
Before anyone decides to jump on my back about cultural differences and expectations towards tipping, understand that in most European countries it is customary to tip at 10% no different to the USA. In Germany we tip @ 10-15% no different than America. So quit your bitchin' nigga, about "European attitudes" because it's not a European attitude, it is my personal, individual, self taught and practiced attitude. *rolls eyes* Such an American thing to do though, start talking nonsense about countries in the world you aren't taught about, and about their customs you obviously have no idea about. Dickhead.
Am I supposed to tip the person who gives me my food at the drive thru window at taco bell???? my mind is so fucked right now
Point Made........For Some Reason The Food Hospitality Industry Thinks They Are Something Special And Should Be Entitled To Extra Money Just for Doing Their Job..... Cheers Glen.
Seinfeld episode... Four? Jerry wants to rent a new apartment, and he's weighing up the pros and cons. The new place has a self contained garden and fire place. He asks, do you tip a wood guy? Do you tip a gardner? What about a coal guy, do you tip the coal guy? Probably the same person who delivers the wood! Ugh... Well then you gotta tip him! :cuss:
So because being a bartender is hard work they don't get paid properly by their bosses.... Right Tips should be earned and complementary, not relied upon to make a minimum wage. Am I missing something or is it just plain absurd that people who have a normal job make sometimes not more than 2 dollars an hour? Sounds like some indian construction worker in Quatar makes just as much. Of course they don't get tips (they might even get less than 2 dollars an hour ) but it seems really shitty and below standards to let your staff depend on tips and only pay them like 3 fucking dollars. It might look different when you're used to this system but really: aren't there a lot of examples that proof this. Shouldn't waiters just get a normal wage and tips be complementary, not mandatory or expected and really relied upon to make a decent income for a hard days work?
So because they don't make a normal wage I should be responsible for actually securing their wage? It shouldn't be up to me, and it shouldn't be expected of me. They're not my employees. I should pay for my drinks AND pay the person who brings it to me (which is their job)? Sounds ridiculous to me. Something's off there for sure, but it shouldn't be up to PAYING customers to fix it.
No one expects them to do anything for free, but it shouldn't be the responsibility of customers to pay these people.
Right. Quite the modern day martyrs lol. Maybe we should just tip EVERYONE who doesn't make a normal wage.
