The thing with waiters is I heard they'll spit in your food otherwise! So maybe americans merely tip out of fear
I always tip at least 20% of bill. I feel bad for wait staff, their pay sucks and they work very hard.
Great attitude for a great system in the greatest country of the world Nobody is ultimately happy but it keeps the system going and most bills payed so yeah. I don't think customers are concerned to the same extent about getting spit in their food anywhere else in the world (but correct me if I'm wrong)
I'm not even rude to the staff if they get my order wrong. Unless they would refuse to get it corrected I guess (never happened). I also can't think of a time I send anything back, which doesn't mean it is always perfect. It just has to be bad in a real serious way. Somehow this never happened to me, and I rarely tip edit: and yes, I return to the same bars/restaurants
Again, this is a cultural thing so I get this seems weird to you guys. But in America, i don't know if any other country lives on a tip based system, but here if you go out to eat, yes it is your responsibility to tip. It is a custom, a social contract like I said earlier. If you can't tip you shouldn't go out to eat and you should go out to eat with the expectation that the 15 - 20% is already built into the cost of the food. Would a different system be better? Duh. But that's the way it is nationwide here and I for one am not going to screw over a single mom working a shitty job to stand up for the principle of it. If you want to stand up for principle then don't go out to eat period, because the entire restaurant industry works like this here.
I'd rather give a tip to a chef at a restaurant, if the meal was good. I mean, that IS the service and the product that I specifically went out to get. And that's also kind of a shitty difficult job. Or do they also get tips?
^ Because they pay their restaurant staff a normal wage? I agree 100% Would have my preference too I mean. Anyway, PR: I am not against tipping if people would depend on it (which is simply not the case here), or after an excellent service. I just find it a retarded system as well and it would not fly in my country. Employers have to pay their restaurant staff a normal wage to begin with. Tips are a bonus.
if the place is being run fair and properly, the wait staff shares/divides their tips with the support staff; busboys, cooks, hostess. the real BS over tipping began because the IRS was frothing at the mouth over the countless billions of $$$ of undeclared income each waiter/waitress was making (insert sarcastic rolling eyes) and forced them to begin to declare tips as taxable income and as a result the base wage was drastically lowered. In the excerpt from the article posted earlier it said that the wage at that restaurant chain with no-tipping policy was increased to $14/hour from $2.13 PER HOUR. So put yourself in that position of having to make ends meet and the only income you can rely on is gonna be $85.20 for 40 hours of work before taxes. Let that sink in for a second. it's the asinine tax laws that you should bitch about, not folks like you and I simply trying to earn a living and survive.
Your Foreigners to Us And your Waitresses and Bar staff Seem little More than Slaves ! But You Encourage The System ?
I dont Thing our Postman Earns Good money How much Should I give Him Per Letter ? Perhaps if these Waitresses Went and Did other jobs then the bars and Restaurants Would have to Up the wages to Encourage people to work there ( I feel someone is being Conned somewhere along the Line )
Not really because a majority of decent human beings leave tips. In some tourist spots in cities a bartender can make a very good income. maybe your country should pay the postman a better wage. Here they make enough so there is no need to tip them.
I agree. A dollar is pretty good. It's not like the drinks are cheap. I don't drink though, but I used to. Even then I didn't go to bars; at least not much. But I learned early on from an old friend that it's impolite to not tip the bartender.
Ha Ha Listen to what you Just said I say maybe your country should pay the barman a better wage here they make enough so there is no need to tip them You see the Irony in your words ?
Or just dislikes you Or when you're a regular customer. Or when you send stuff back and they decide you're whiny, etc. etc. You probably heard of the stereotype too. I'm afraid it is an american one and it might very well be linked to the fact people in these jobs are underpaid and depend on tips. Disclaimer: not saying every waiter in your country does this or that waiters etc. never do such nasty stuff in other countries. I know of an example in my own that made the news Well, if the far majority of americans think this is working ok it is hard to force things. If they do not and want normal wages you have a point. Also a boycot from customers could force things quite easily. Of course I also understand stuff like this is easier said than done
