Today, many centuries ago, Jesus died for your sins

But seriously, there are hardcover theology books out there that debate this point in a very intellectual way. People like Chuck Swindoll and John MacArthur sometimes speak on the topic, with sermon titles like, "The Scandal of Grace". I've been subjected to several of those over the years. They get deep into the salvation by works concept, usually quoting heavily from the book of James, and contrasting it to seemingly contradictory passages from Paul's writings.

I could explain it better, but I don't care enough to put out the effort.

But which of them has stood in the council of the LORD to see or to
hear his word? Who has listened and heard his word?
    what word?..

I doubt if I would get myself into a serious debate on this topic, and if I did, it probably wouldn't be in this forum.

Now, if you guys will excuse me, it's time for me to go commit a few more sins. ;) I'm well short of my daily quota.

All great men in history have been misunderstood at some point.

Maybe the people who thought Hitler could be appeased in the 30's misunderstood him?

Could be? I'm not sure that his intentions were misunderstood. He made them very clear from the beginning.

God on the other hand... Boy, does that take some interpreting.. There's more to be misunderstood than is cleary defined.

Note the 'maybe' in my previous post. I know that Hitler spelled it all out in mien kampf. Perhaps they chose to misjudge him because they couldn't face the consequences of standing up to him.

I'd have to agree there. Especially given the fact that we have these different religions with different and seemingly incompatible views on the matter.
I quite like the Indian saying that God is 'not this, not that', in other words something we can't define on an intellectual level.

The trouble with religions like Christianity and Islam is partly that their ideas are very much over constructed, so they paint themselves into a corner.

Especially if you look at it from a theological atheist point of view ;)

Exacty. How many officers and citizens went down with Hitler and the Nazis? Even in Germany's dying days, they held out to the letter. Why? There was no misunderstanding. It was join or die, even in death.

The Hindus have a saying I love. It's something very similar to, "The truth of god is One. He goes by many names."
