That was also part of the report, parents don't care as much, I mean back two generations before the hippie movement families were much better structured no? I mean think about it, most of the parents nowadays who are taking care of teenage kids are from the hippie era, no?
Now I am not completely filled in on that act, didn't it have something to do with the minimum pass grade of 60% in the U.S. raised to 65%? Cause a friend of mine from Buffalo told me they raised the minimum pass grade, like in Canada it's 50%, but whatever. Anyway, yeah, in Canada it's not so much schools cutting PE, it's high schools only requiring 1 PE credit, I think there should be a requirement of 4, I mean I only took 3 because you only have to take 6 creds in 4th year and I didn't want to take 7, but whatever. I think the problem is instead of targeting tobbacco comapanies they should target all these crap food manufacturers no? People always bitch about smoking ruining your health but when it comes to trans fats they just limit it, big fucking whoop, I say, close down all the fast food joints and all the chip factories.
No it's the hippie generation's kids and grandchildren raising children now. We are nearing our sixties, or well into our fifties. Our kids were well behaved....cough, cough....
Every individual has a choice of what they put in their bodies, no one forces anyone to eat at MacDonalds. California tried a fat tax in the eighties it didn't work. No more than tobacco taxes work or prohibition.
I only put the blame where I see it fits. And it's not on hardworking parents or kids that want to play outside, but can't because their parks are overrun with gangs and drug sales. Even in my small town the kids can't go to the skateboard park they raised the funds to build because the hispanic gangs have taken it over and have stabbed a couple of people there in the last few weeks. The sheriff can't provide patrols for the area because his funds have been cut or his services are mandated elsewhere without adequate funding. But they patrol the local Walmart distribution center.
In the end there's always a scape goat, that being the tobbacco companies, I don't know about you but I'd rather see people taking a drag than chowing down a big mac.
I'd be ok with this IF there's credit given for phys activities OUTSIDE of school. Schools do not nor may not be the best places for all the activities one may wish to participate in. There's only so much time and unless these credits will replace other existing credits (which will be hard to do), I'd hate to give up extra-curricular activities that I've selected on my own accord just so there'll be time to complete credits in compulsory activities. Schools PE pgms tends to be overly focused on competitive sports, lots of phys activities are not competitive and are rarely included in the school curriculum. And competitive sports don't fit everyone's style, lotsa kids left behind, don't make the cut, whatever. In Ont. here HS kids must complete some 40 hrs volunteer work, perhaps a similar requirement for phys activity. Smoking rates are at the lowest in decades, some 21% of the population smoke, down from 56% in the 1950's. That's a big drop. So I'm with u here. I think there's a call out there for that change, this report being one of them. The common excuse given to tackle an issue is lack of resources, I say let's close the book on smoking (to free up resources) and change our focus on obesity.
