I like tool, i like his word play, most of thier songs cover topics that are to smart for the average person. most people don't bother to ever pick up a book let alone to pic up a book to find out what Maynard is trying to say with his songs. then again when it comes to music it's pretty much just a matter of opinions, and unless you are the catholic church you can't kill people over thier opinions.

Zen your right, I would disagree with you. I think hes not half bad, except Pusifer is shitty as it gets to me.

Doug I don't think they are dreary at all. Dark, yes, but in a positive way.

I don't like the dead, i do like how thier crowds are mellow. I understand the need to release aggression, thus the aggressive music it just seems to defeat the point if you have to spend the duration of the live show trying not to get trampled.

Either I just dont get the appeal, or my connection with music is just too well established for my mind to lower itself to the sounds TOOL makes. Sure, the musicians in the band may be talented, but so was Mozart and I say that Bach made Mozart look like a massive douche bag any day. The majority of people who play guitar can do some wild shit that can be considered a talent, but very few of them actually stand out as innovative and profound.
And it has nothing to do with aggresive music, although the dropped D and the heavy metal sound is a tad lame in my opinion. Some of the music I listen to would make your ears bleed, but I listen those bands because no one in the world can sound anything like them, whereas TOOL sounds similar to my ears to a lot of bands. Maybe they were groundbreaking when they first came out, but the shit is just old now. I remember I liked the song Stinkfist when I was 10 or 11, and that was it.
A band like Lightning Bolt, Holy Fuck, Hella, early Boredoms, Ruins, or Power Pill Fist are typically more intense then the loudest and craziest metal around, yet they are extremley melodic, shift and explore new styles constantly, are entirely unique and unlike other established bands, and somehow make your brain feel like its going to melt from the aggression but do it without being dark or come off with a tough guy additue. Not to mention that all the bands I've listed have combined used probably 3 minutes total of lyrics in an album count that goes well over 100.
