I don't know the name of the guy(s) that played drums for Carlos Santana but they sure kicked *ss.

Does any one remember the name of the drummer from the Dave Brubeck Quartet? That guy was amazing!

My GOD! I had to read 62 posts before I saw Carl Palmer mentioned!

I won't list in any particular order of preference (except for Carl), but here are some drummers that I find amazing- and this is from a guy who was a professional drummer for 18 years-albiet in a local band:

Carl Palmer- My first and primary influence. I picked up a set of drumsticks for the first time because of TANK! He was known as "The Buddy Rich of rock music" and in fact ended up being good friends with Mr. Rich.

Buddy Rich- The only nuclear powered drummer!

Phil Collins- Listen to any BRAND X album and be prepared to be blown away.

Terry Bozzio- The man is inhuman!

    Billy Cobham

    Alan White

Dave Lombardo- Fastest feet on the bass drum pedals!

    John Bonham- Redefines "rock solid".

Stewart Copeland- A deceptively gentle powerhouse.

Keith Moon- One of a kind. Maybe more attitude than skill, but I still like his sound.

Neil is so technically perfect he irritates me. Mike Portnoy has worked so hard in copying Neil's style he forgot to be a musician.

Flame me up the whazoo if you must.... this is all my opinion

LOL Took me about forever but I finally remembered Edgar Winter's drummer's name on FRANKENSTEIN: Chuck Ruff

I also forgot to mention Louis Bellson and the drummer for Keith Emerson's band before he formed ELP. In The Nice, Keith was playing with a guy by the name of Brian "Blinky" Davidson. Listen to his solo in "Ars Longa Vita Brevis"...amazing stuff!

Also, no one has mentioned Alphonse Muzon. He was on drums with Larry Coryell (one HELL of a fine jazz guitarist) for a while in the late 70s and early 80s.

dont know if anyone mention this person, i cant even recall his name atm but the drummer that played with hendrix when he was in the band of gypsys...i really enjoyed his style, stage presence, and to me(might be dumb) but the way he played on some of the tracks especially live machine gun(one of my all time favorites) it seemed as if his drumming was answering jimis guitar and visa versa...but after all this i still dont think anyone can touch bonzo...just incredible beats, speed (hands and feet) and natural talent, nick masons a favorite( loved watching him on live at pompeii)

Yes Buddy Miles played with Hendrix in Band of Gypsies...and Mitch Mitchell was the drummer for the Experience..who by the way beat out Aynsley Dunbar for the drum seat by a coin toss!

If anyone wants to know pretty much about any band or musician, I strongly recomment hitting this site and keeping it in your favorites!!

    http://www.allmusic.com/

GREAT site. Any time I have a brain fart and can't recall a musician's name, or want to see the discography of a group, that's where I go. I've never been disappointed yet.
They also have 2 companion sites, ALLMOVIE and ALLGAME which are also worth a look- with links to both from the ALLMUSIC page. ALLMOVIE is just that: discussion on thousands of movies...like www.IMDB.com, and ALLGAME covers pretty much any PSP, XBOX, PC or any other type of electronic game.
