Heron, you say we should respect other's beliefs, but your beliefs are not hers. You see Yahweh as just a tribal god with a good publicist, but she see's him as the One And Only. They are fundamentally opposed, and she cannot see things as you do. Historically she might be wrong, maybe it really was as you say. But when it comes to belief, her different beliefs should be, as per your own words, accepted as her own way, different but equal, no different from how you might view the Germanic religions, or the Native Americans. Do you call them sheep for believing their priest or shaman? (oh, and congrats on the baby girl )
No I dont, but unlike native beliefs, the people believe it because that is their beliefs, the product of thousands of years of tribal evolution and can be directly traced back to their beginnings. Christianity isnt like that. I can trace my families Christian lineage all the way back to where they gave up their ways, and let their culture be destroyed. Their lineage, and the natural beliefs that they had, for 40,000 years, were gone, or just bastardized and canonized into the new faith. I dont respect a religion of lies, obvious lies, but I can respect a persons faith in their god, if they have a better reason than "I just do" They could have just as much love and faith in Yahweh as they do now, even if they accepted that he isnt the great creator. That is true faith, when you dont need the lies to support it. If Yahweh couldnt be the all knowing great creator, then they wouldnt worship him. But if they could anyway, he would still bless them, but without all the lies about him. I do believe in their god, for the record, and he is just as valid a god as my own, but i dont pretend that my gods are more than what they are.
Believing in something because it's tradition or passed down to you is just as ridiculous as believing because it's in a book...really, all beliefs in gods/religion are ridiculous, at least from some perspectives. That, however, doesn't make it wrong to believe. But it does mean that everyone's rationale is going to be illogical, usually. Also, most Christians today believe because of tradition. Face it, the old ways are gone, this IS our new culture. It's not as long a tradition, true. But it's been passed down in the same way, parent to child.
granted, but it is a tradition founded on lies, to replace other traditions. It didnt occur in a natural evolution of a people, it was invented. Im sorry, I cant respect it. I understand what you are saying. You should question all things, books, traditions, etc, but know why you follow them.
Well, are new ideas inherently wrong or undesirable? I mean, there's been plenty of new religions that spread, like Zoroastrianism, Mithraism, Islam, neo-Platonism, and several more that I've heard of but can't remember. "Pagan" religions changed all the time, new cults formed and others were forgotten. I'm not justifying the methods the Christians used, yeah there were lies and persecution. But there is real spirituality in there too. Keep in mind that many people converted willingly, and most of the time fused the old ways with the new. So the tradition does live on in some ways, though of course it's changed alot.
Yes they changed, but it was all in a direct related lineage of the faith. And yes the old ways do live on, in a way, such as the gods being sainted, but that is just a sad mockery of what they are. I know where you are coming from, and understand it, but I dont feel that i have to accept it. And yes, there is some real spirituality there, like I said, i respect the faith of the person, just not the thing they put their faith in to. I know they are feeling love, i know they are feeling something, but it may not be what their story book says. Maybe they are feeling this collective of love, and they call it Jesus. Who knows, but they wouldnt accept it if they accepted the history of their religion. Like I said, i dont need to make my gods more than they are to love and worship them, they do. If their god didnt create the world, have a son, and die on a cross, then they wouldnt love him anymore.
10. No one will kill you for not drinking Beer. Oh yes, because that's totally still happening in this day and age. 9. Beer doesn't tell you how to have sex. Neither did Jesus. He advised WHEN to have it, not how. 8. Beer has never caused a major war. Jesus didn't cause a war. 7. They don't force Beer on minors who can't think for themselves. I chose my religion by myself. I didn't have anything "forced" on me, the way all my atheist teachers have forced evolution on me and, in so many words, sid that people who don't believe in evolution are brainwashed idiots. 6. When you have Beer, you don't knock on people's doors trying to make them drink it. No, but the Beer companies' commercials will pop up every single time there's a commercial break and invade your home without knocking on the door. Oh, and generally the missionaries will ask first if you'd like a lesson. If you say no, they'll leave. Huh. Funny. I thought people were trying to get rid of stereotypes.
