i don't think the VU are underrated. They're one of (if not THE) most influential bands of all time. They get all the credit they deserve. Overrated The Doors: the debut album and 'Strange Days' are great, but the rest doesn't even come close to those two albums. Still a good band though. Nirvana: Kurt Cobain gets worshipped like a God just because he commited suicide. Plus all those dreadful NU-metal bands are inspired by this band. Or maybe i just don't like grunge. Underrated Kula Shaker: one of the best bands of the nineties. They did two albums, influenced by sixties psychedelia and eastern music, much better than all the other britpop bands. The Yardbirds: Often overlooked in favor of other British Invasion bands, though they were one of the best British blues bands. George Harrison: a very underrated singer/songwriter. All love all the songs he did with the Beatles, and the album All Things Must Pass is better than everything John Lennon recorded. The Silver Apples: electronic pop pioneers, released two albums in '68 and '69 13th Floor Elevators: the first psychedelic band with a very original sound, but still very unknown and underappreaciated.
Lucifer Sam: The James Gang ~ Lead by guitarist Joe Walsh of Eagles fame, The James Gang helped to redefine rock music in the early 70's. In 1971, one of the best 70's rock albums was released by The James Gang: James Gang Rides Again. Most people have probably heard the famous riffs of "Funk #49" and "Woman," but have never even realized they were James Gang songs. The original, Walsh-led band only created three, yet very good, albums from 1969 to 1972, but remaining member went on to record later, lesser releases. HELL YEAH!! "Yer Album" is one of the greatest albums ever!! Another under-rated band is Mountain... and i also think Frank Zappa is, too...
i think you're wrong here... how can their early work be overrated? I never see the early albums (pre-Rubber Soul) in 'Top-... albums' or 'Best albums of the sixties' lists. You can't compare their early albums to their later albums or albums of other artists, or albums that were released twenty or thirty years later. I think that, in 1964, 'A Hard Day's Night' was one of the best albums of the year, together with the Stones' debut album and Dylan's albums. Same for 'Help!' or 'Please Please Me'. Their sound was truly different than other bands, they influenced so many bands, from the sixties till now... They even wrote the Stones' first hit. Plus they could do some real rockers as well ('Long Tall Sally', 'Leave My Kitten Alone', 'Dizzy Miss Lizzy', 'Slow Down', ...). And you have to admit that Lennon and McCartney are the greatest (pop)songwriters... Look at all they #1 hits they scored. That's just like saying Elvis is overrated. Before The Beatles LP's consisted of 2 great singles and 10 fillers. The Beatles changed this. The Beatles were revolutionary; they were the first to use feedback (I Feel Fine), they introduced the sitar (Norwegian Wood), they were the first to use a fade-in (Eight Days a Week), they recorded one of the first hardrock songs (Helter Skelter, according to Lennon), the first to print lyrics on albums (Sgt.Pepper), ... They found a perfect ballance between commercial and experimental.
I'm going to give a real response, none of this shit normies have'nt heard of. Over rated--Oasis. I know alot of people like them, but I think they're crap. I think their music is crap, their lyrics are crap. They said they were bigger than the beatles, which was bull crap. I'm sorry, but I think we can all agree that anyone who thinks they're bigger than the beatles must be off their fucking rocker. Under rated--Incubus. I'm not going to lie; I don't listen to incubus. I don't own any of their albums, not one. I probably can't even name one of their songs... but I have heard them. I really think they have something going, something bigger than the shit music they've been pigeon-holed with. I'm not saying they're amazing, or even great for that matter, but I do think they are very under rated.
Don't get me wrong here, I LOVE The Beatles! However, I do think they are a little overrated. They created great music and were experimental and revolutionary, but people idolize them FAR too much. As for their early work, I prefer the 1964-65 Yardbirds over the 1964-65 Beatles. I just seem to fancy The Yardbirds' sound. Even Lennon knew The Beatles were overrated... he said himself that people would buy ANYTHING with the word "Beatles" on it. I guess it's not necessarily the music that's overrated, it's The Beatles themselves. It's just my opinion... nothing to get uptight about. We all have differing opinions here.
OVERRATED - Linkin Park - This boy band dressed as a rock band sucks. Good Charlotte, Simple Plan, Story of the Year - Is there any difference between these boy bands dressed as punk bands? They sound, look and play the same they're not rockers. Modest Mouse - I guess I just dont get the appeal of these supposed conceptual rockers, they're just not good music. Britney Spears - Thanks to Empty-V she's had a big "career", but she sucks. Avril Lavigne - The once pop singer is now trying to look like an indie rocker, but she tries too hard and pulls out all the stops. Ashely Simpson - How dare she try to compare herself to Pat Benatar and Joan Jett, she's not even in the same league, not even in the same planet, same dimension! This pop singer dressed as a rock star is now a hit thanks to Empty-V's movement for the white popstars. Memo to Ashley: Wearing a shirt that says "rocker" doesn't make you one, just like calling your album edgy doesn't make it so! Frank Zappa - This guy is a legend...why? Because he sounds different? Well, scratching your nails on a chalkboard sounds different, it doesn't make it great, and his music is awful, just purely godawful. Overrated, overrated, overrated. UNDERRATED - The Yeah yeah yeahs - These guys just rock, Karen O is such a hottie and delicious looking and their music is original and great to listen to, it's too bad Empty-V doesn't give them enough publicity. Coldplay - They have beautiful music and Chris Martin is just brilliant with his incredible vocals and piano playing, this is a great band, I've loved practically everything they've done. Favorite song is Clocks, it's just an incredible song. White Stripes - These are two really good singers and their music is very catchy. Seven Nation Army, and Fell in love with a girl just blew me away the first time I heard them. Michelle Branch - She's beautiful, she's smart, she's sexy, she can write great music, she can play the guitar, and her music is just excellent. Nuff said.
Couldn't agree more! God bless you for saying that! The only reason Cobain is a "legend" (I use the term very loosely) is because he romanticized suicide, and there's nothing romantic about it. He had a serious mental illness and complex, and paid for it in the end with committing suicide and people made it look as if he was Jesus Christ or something, as if his death was a sacrifice for us, when really it was only bullshit. There's nothing romantic about suicide, nothing, and he's a legend because his fans put him up on a pedestal unable to look at the serious mental illness he had.
with this Kurt Cobain thing, i think he could go either way...musically i think people are over rating him...but i think it may be because of the fact that everyone loved HIM (not necessarily his music) so they jumble it all into one catagory.
i'd just like to note that i no longer think rooney are underrated. still like them and all, but i think i just finally came to my senses. also for my underrated list: the hives- their first cd was basically one song [except find another girl], so i could understand critiscism, but their new cd brought a lot more to their game i think. especially diabolical scheme, its amazing. his voice is so raw. i'd recommend it. le tigre- most people wont give them a chance cause bikini kill was big on feminism, but le tigre is great. i think their instrumental talent lacks sometimes, but they bring a lot of different ideas into music. the sounds- of all the bands that have been put into the "THE" bands category, they're the most innovative/creative.
over rated Metallica- blah! the Beatles (please dont kill me)- dont get me wrong, they are pretty good, just overrated those hip- hoppers- have sex and do drugs! yea, but are there real meanings to these "songs"? punk bands- life is so difficult boo-hoo... Under rated Blue Oyster Cult- they seriously dont get enough credit Deep Purple- half the people I talk to dont even know who they are! The Meat Puppets- bet you never even heard of them! Guns N Roses- no one likes them anymore, I dont know why...
Musically he was pretty cool, his voice was interesting and his lyrics always had crazy metaphors, as for his guitar skills, they are just average Alot of people did love him, because of his looks and his I-dont-give-a-fuck-what-you-think-attitude. I love Nirvana and Kurt, but people give him credit for the wrong reasons... okay my lecture is done!
OVER: Nirvana - most overrated band. The Doors - actualy it's Jim who is overrated(he was just too drunk) UNDER: Live - i love almost all their songs
Ah, you're not the only one. I love the beatles, but there a group of people on the board who think like you, so don't worry.
