ninbin in australia is very much a hippy town, as is byron bay but byron in opinion, is becoming too over poulated, and comercilised. for example, we have what they call schoolies which is when all the yr 12 students have a break or go on holiday after their exams, and byron is fastly becoming a very poular place for that. that and tourists.

I've heard that the Taos area of New Mexico is pretty mellow. But I'm not sure, I thought it was full of yuppies and ski bunnies.

There is something about Vermont. Where else can you go to a "Democracy for America" meet-up and run into Howard Dean, Bernie Sanders AND Thom Hartman?

Maybe all of the Phishheads will move there to be near their favorite ice cream flavor. I literally ran into Phish in Copenhagen once. I quite accidently opened a barn door in Christiania (speaking of places hippies have taken over) and there was Phish, playing to a huge crowd of people. That was a might bit surprising. How often does one open a barn door and find a concert behind it?

I liked Northhamton MA about ten years ago, but it has lost alot of it's character over the years and many of the artists are moving to Easthampton to be near the art studios and new non-profit art spaces. How is Flywheel doing? I haven't been there in a while. I was on the original "Friends of Flywheel" list and I showed my art and video work there a couple of times.

I recently moved to Portland, Me, and I can tell you, it has not been taken over by hippies. It is great and all but the rich summer people rule here with iron fisticuffs.

Where do hippies hang out here? Perhaps they rule in secret and I didn't know, lol!

(edit: I would say I might look a bit like Depp as Willy Wonka. I am so not seeing that movie)

    Cheerio,

    :)

If you get the chance, go to Madison Wisconsin. It used to be called the 2nd gold coast (after SF) back in the 60's and 70's. Had a real great music scene and still does. People still play guitar out in the street or on campus at the university.

Are you from Madison? I just moved here a few months ago, and most of what I have encountered is like a regular college town (with irregular + inordinate alcohol consumption). Maybe you could show me the city's better side.

As for towns that have been taken over, I have had the pleasure of experiencing one gem that truely fits this bill.

Bisbee, AZ is incredible. It used to hold 20,000 ppl - miners and their family members. In the early 70's the price of copper dropped, and the (MASSIVE) mine closed. The huge open pit can be viewed, it rivals the butte, MT anaconda mine for size.

The freaks subsequently took over, and the town can be a beautiful place to visit/live even today. And when I say took over I don't mean a few moved in, I mean that they outnumber the other residents. Holdouts from the '60s and young travellers alike. For the most part, the town is all about music, artists, and individuality.

I passed through in 2002, and for new years, bisbee is the palce to be.
A _city sponsored_ party comprised of residents, travellers, fire dancing and drum circles. The town is filled all night with music from every type of instrument you can imagine roaming the streets. The scene is unimaginably unique.

I would strongly suggest that anybody in the neighborhood check it out.
