Don't you think your statement is a little one sided and a lot racist? Do you think incursions only come from Muslim Pakistan? India just passed a very racist citizenship law which strips people of their nationality. Does that tell you anything about how Muslims feel about hate which originates from the Modi government?
Bagel, you make lots of sense and that's why Republicans don't understand you. I have experienced something similar.
Using minorities for labor doesn't mean someone isn't racist. I mean, southern plantation owners anyone?
Because the Secret Service is traditionally composed of a few good friends of the President who are willing to die for him.
I personally don't think we need a wall. Instead we simply need to patrol the border a LOT better and exercise the laws that are already on the books. Particularly the laws regarding companies that hire people who are not legally eligible to work in the US. They need to be actively sought out and prosecuted. They are the primary driver for human smuggling with their insatiable need for the absolute maximum profit possible, so fuck the Americans if they can shave a nickel from a worker's paycheck. I was only addressing the notion that walls or fences don't work, which is absolute fallacy. Of course they work or people wouldn't have built them, for thousands of years. On every populated continent.
They're all gone, there are no more slaves and the only plantations are tourist retreats and the like. However, the exploitation of minorities by employers happens today in northern and southern meat and poultry plants. There's also a couple of yogurt makers who exploit minority labor, but since they are also minorities, nobody cares. The same way nobody seems to care about the slaves in north Africa today, the ones who are actually breathing and suffering, now.
I agree with some of that. Yes, enforcing and strengthening our laws will work wonders. Automation will help too. While I dont see this as a good thing, the fact that unskilled labor jobs are being replaced with robots means we have fewer needs for an unskilled migrantabor force. If people can't come here and work, they won't come. As I pointed out a few posts back, it's actually already happening. Since the Great Recession, immigration from Latin America has slowed and is currently at its lowest point in years. Now, more Mexican born illegal immigrants are moving back to Mexico than there are immigrants coming to the US from Mexico. So economic forces are quickly making the wall obsolete before it's even built. But sensationalism and fear is the best way to get reelected, so the wall will continue. But I do disagree with this idea that walls work. 1st of all it's been pointed out time and time again that the majority of illegal immigrants entered the country legally by overstaying work and student visas and just never going home. The majority of illegal immigrants in this country are from southeast Asia and not Latin America. So, a wall is simply not going to address those 2 big issues. Even if a wall was effective it still only addresses such a small portion that by definition its completely ineffective
I'm not trying to be either, but I'm not avoiding either, either! Really, I'd like a solution we can all live with. Going back to when states ran their own shit is a good start. For way too long the federal government had operated virtual colonies all over the country. Sure, some of them are essential to things like defense and commerce. But we have military installations in some of the dumbest places (like Fort DeRussy in Waikiki beach, a plot worth hundreds of times more to the local economy). I don't think democrats share such a vision. In fact, I'm pretty sure they want the federal government to assume as much control as possible from each and every state. The result is just plain weird in many places. All over Atlanta there are intersections and strips of highways that fall under federal jurisdiction, but not necessarily in conjunction with roadway plans set by the local municipalities. So now we have all these impressive intersections with wheelchair ramps, talking crossing signals in some areas, and the beginnings of a sidewalk. A sidewalk that abruptly ends. At the point the city/county would be continuing the sidewalks. IF there was a need for this. In some places there is, but in many the wheelchair ramps are only good for AWD chairs with a winch on the front. It's so fantastically stupid and yet, it costs us $50k extra per intersection (2x2), as a national debt line item.
Another point, chasing the racism boogey-honkies seems to work pretty well when the economy is in distress and jobs are scarce. Maybe it's time to back the fuck off of it for a while since so many people are working and don't have time to make a good show of it. Don't worry, a recession is always on the horizon and people will be struggling once again. A GREAT time to drive their need to assign blame. Assigning blame during a boom, seems counterintuitive. And yet, I KNOW a "boom" is very subjective and I'm positive some folks can offer "proof" that Trump has already crashed the economy and we'll all be eating beet soup in a week. But consider the alternative. It's the only way to be sure.
78% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck, myself included. Boom is a word politicians throw around to feel good about themselves and galvanize their fan base (most of them also living paycheck to paycheck) Trump's boom doesn't mean much to us regular people
