Seeing as I seem to be a European and "the youth", I can say that you two are talking shit. You always seem to think, well, if things are so bad here, they must be even worse elsewhere because America is so much better than anyone else.

Europeans, at least those where I'm from, certainly do NOT think that the papers should only feature government-approved news. And they don't; all the fuckups of the politicians make the front page, I can assure you.

The government certainly doesn't cut people's freedom of speech, which has cost the life of one particular person making use of his freedom abundantly, but (luckily) freedom of speech has not decreased since. And if it would, we would not just think "oh, that's too bad" and eat some more soup.

Though I do like soup really really much... :)

If Mark Twain were raised from the dead and went on this website I'm betting he would have a really good laugh at the idiotic drivel that Huckfin posts on here.

Yea, I'm not sure where they got that from...Seems like it is just racism against Europeans or something...you know how americans always make fun of Canada for no reason too? Even though Canada is better about giving people freedoms? If anything it seems like Europe has a better handle on things than America..and I REALLY don't know where the liberal comment came from...if anything the conservatives in this nation think more like those high school kids than any liberals I know!

My general impression is that people from Europe and Japan are often more hip with international events than people in the U.S., especially young people. I actually feel embarrassed when I'm with a group of my young American friends and someone else from Europe or Japan is in the group and the discussion is about world events. I don't mean to bash Americans, but things have gotten isolated in the U.S. over the past decade, especially the past few years. I sometimes get a little uneasy myself when I'm talking with Europeans and I'm not as well-versed on world events as they are. That's one of the reasons I've made an effort lately to secure video news sources that originate from outside the U.S.

And who's to blame for this? Of course the mainstream media networks. But more intimimately with young Americans...MTV, access hollywood, and overall pop-culture. Even the modern hip-hop culture is to blame. It's gotten so pervasive that I personally have known all too many young people who have an open disgust for self-education. I'm not even joking. Then again, I live in metro-New Jersey, and the common stereotype for this place is all too accurate.

I say blame the damn parents. It seems like everyone is leaving it up to everyone else to raise their kids these days. There is more to being a parent that putting a roof over the kids head and food in their stomach. Take part in your kids education, teach them some morals and values. Think the media sucks? Block MTV or limit TV time to a half an hour a day. Encourage your kids to read. Encourage them to teach themselves, to think for themselves. That's what my parents did to me, and I hated them for it. Now I love them for it because I am not some dummed down idiot more concerned with Britney's marriage or the latest fad than I am the human condition.

Like I said eariler in this thread pop-culture today is conformist. The youth of today don't see that their culture is manfactured by suits that only care about their money.

Regardless of advertising and pop-culture, people have to think for themselves. Blame the kids, don't make excuses.

I blame the kids for buying into pop-culture thinking they are hip and edgy when they are tamer then 60's, 70's and even 80's counter culture. I don't care if they got sex, drugs and violence in it, so did the counter cultures of old yet the counter cultures of old had meaning while the pop culture don't.
