I really don't know about bigotry per say but I do think there's a bit of a problem with the so called 'free speech' that this forum promotes. There are certain people who will bash or call you on certain things, and will 'censor' certain threads and posts because it doesn't fit into a certain unsaid or unestablished ideology. What I think is my opinion, as what you think is yours, and unfortunately there are those certain thoughts and threads that aren't allowed to be shared. That being said, that's my thing about not just this forum, but hipforums as a whole.
With such a generalized definition of bigotry, it loses it's meaning. I suppose since I hate what Hitler did, I am bigot? If that is what you all consider "bigotry" then we may as well just abandon the term altogether and NEVER fight discrimination because it's the bigot's right to discriminate. YOU all have the same philosophy that MLK Jr. fought against. YOU all seem to have talked FDR out of fighting against Hitler. YOU all would seem to believe that the Trail of Tears was "just life". YOU all would keep the same bigotry going on as it always has been. Because "everyone" is a "bigot". By this stupid definition, I am a bigot against tomatoes.
Those that Mind Don't Matter and those who Matter don't Mind. Great thread and good timing as always.
How can anyone decide whos beliefs are correct and whos are not? Why is it so wrong for a person to peacefully dislike another for whatever reason? If thier action is simpley personal dislike and the most action thay take is to simply, peacefully voce thier dislike without using hateful terms and names then why educate them? The may be a bigot but there only direct harm if kept within the confines of the above is personal ignorance at best. They would be doing no more harm than a peaceful protest of the goverment or some company. Now if they resort to yelling, rude ethnic slures, sexual bashing ect then they need at least some sort of education period. If a person can not make thier point without lowering themselves to using vulgarity and name calling then thier education is deeply lacking. I sort of like the idea that others dislike groups of people for whatever reason, it makes the world more intersting than if we all went around hugging each other and acting like that movie telling everyone "peace and be well". I just think it needs to be done alot better than some handle it.
If I had the $$$, I'd be "off to see the Wizard". That'd be a hell of a night of a little of that stoned immaculate philosophy.
How about this simple thing? I have seen "bigots" on here and else where that actually felt safe expressing their views- and people that didn't agree but weren't mean to them about it... well, I've seen real change in people. I've seen real discussion and people re evaluate things they had held on to for a long time. To me that is a very good thing and the way to deal with intolerance. If people became afraid to express how they feel, how would things like that happen? They would still have those views and maybe act apon them but.... there would be little room for change.
