1. The Hipforums announces it first ever fundraiser. After nearly 30 years online, we must ask our members and guests to help support the website. Thanks to years of ongoing financial support of our members, advertisers and volunteer admin staff, we have been able to keep the forums alive.

Now we must ask for help as available funds have all been used for our Internet server and other fees.

So please donate any amount to our PayPal account donate@Hipforum.com to keep the site going. If we can get enough for a few months fees, we won't need to nag you again!

You could also subscribe to the forums and get an upgrade to Supporter or Lifetime Supporter here

The Bank of England slashed interest rates to a 48-year low last Thursday in a move to boost beleaguered manufacturers.

The base rate for borrowing is now 3.75 per cent - as low as it was in 1955.

In those days the average weekly wage was #9.25 and the average house was worth #2,064.

Here we list some of the things you could have got for your money back then.

A GALLON of petrol cost four shillings and six pence - that's 22p in today's money.

A PACKET of cigarettes cost 18p.

FOR #1 you could have bought 15 pints of beer, 14 fish suppers or gone to the cinema 10 times.

In 1955 only eight per cent of people owned their own homes compared to nearly 70 per cent today.

In the same year the government forked out #1.2billion to electrify the rail network - a record amount in today's money.
