.223 and 5.56 ammunition are virtually the same thing. The difference is in the specifications of the AR style (.223) and M designated (5.56) rifles. The M must comply with some government/NATO specifications that include being able to deal with a tracer round. It's lighter weight needs a 12:1 rifling for more spin to keep it from tumbling. AR style uses a what's much better for the 50/55 grain ammo ratio of 7:1 in its rifling. There's also a crimped in primer spec for the 5.56 but both cartridges can have or not have it depending on manufacturing. There's plenty of uncrimped green tip ammo (5.56) and crimped .223 ammo out there because it doesn't matter. Now you know.
