i know a girl who has 10mm. they look normal. unless she pulls her earlobe out. its about 2mm.

not many people here get them anyway. all my friends hate them. so i didnt get them to be in with fashion! i like them, thats all i care about

But maybe you could try taping next time as opposed to a taper? So as that it's not such a big jump for your ears. Rather it's much more gradual stretch over a few days or week or whatever. Reduces the risk of tearing and causing damage
