I honestly think that the whole vegetarian and vegan idea, is starting to become more publicically understood. It's not a secret anymore, it's not something most people can't understand...
Indeed, the veg population is growing, and I think it really does stem off a lot from our generation. I'm NOT sure why, to tell you the truth...but I definitely think it's a good thing.

I really believe that when we are older and have children, being a vegetarian or vegan will just be kind of a normal thing. Of course there will still be omnivores, but I really think it's becoming more common and widespread...and I feel that it will only keep growing.

Just a few years ago when I first went veggie, I couldn't find almost ANYTHING like soy milk, mock meats, or anything relating to the idea ...and now it's normal to see that stuff all over the place. The grocery stores around here really cater a lot to veggies or vegans, and if they dont have products you're looking for they will specially order them for you. I also picked up some vegetarian magazines and cookbooks in local chain stores, which is really odd to me, because I've never seen anything around like it before.

I also notice more people buying these products too...
When I was standing in the freezer section by the organic and vegan products, there were 3 people next to me getting stuff as well, and another pregnant woman who was stocking up on soy ice cream.

Not to sound retarded, but it sort of made me excited. People around here aren't looking at me as if I was from another planet as often anymore.... It's comforting. :)

Edit to say: Just for the record, I plan on STAYING vegan for the rest of my life, so in no way is it a trend for ME... Who knows with other people my age and what not, but ...I know for a fact this is something I will always stick with; it's always been my *cause*

The main reason its so accepted in my eyes is because of the whole yoga/superhealthy trend thats going on with the rich and famous

that defintitley doesnt make you sound retarded to me...we all have reason to be excited about that kind of thing. its good to hear that more and more people are doing this

and even if its just cause of celebrity trends...if more people are doing it the food will become more varied and cheaper which is good for the lower budget veggies who enjoy those kinds of foods

yeah it may be idiotic to do something out of trend and not have a real cause or reason behind it... but if being veg is a trend, well at least it's a healthy humane trend! :)

Way better than a *fur trend* !

My folks are both 60 y/o and have been vegetarians for close to 40 years. The thing is they aren't even close to being hippies, New Agers or "krishnas". My dad is a Pastor in the church denomination known as Seventh-day Adventist. (he's also a liberal Democract cool huhThe majority of the 12 million Adventist around the world are Vegetarian. Several of the church's founders were also some of the main founders of both the Abolitionist and Vegetarian movements back in the 1800's. (Captain Joseph Bates and James and Ellen G. White.) Vegetarianism is not a requirement for church membership but it is strongly encouraged. I had the opposite experience of the folks on here. My parents encouraged, and at times pressured my brother and I to be vegetarians.

The majority of the soy based meat substitutes on the markert today were developed by Adventist scientists and most of these companies are owned and operated by Adventists. ie Loma-Linda, Worthington, etc. Morning Star farms used to be owned by Adventists. These companies have a huge variety of meat subsititutes that taste alot like the real thing.ie burgers, hotdogs, deli "meats" fish, etc. I met Personface at Wakarusa and I grilled some stuff called Fri-Chik and she went nuts over it. I've fooled more than a few meat eaters over the years with these products. Worthington makes this tuna subsititute called Tuno that many meat eaters have sworn up and down was tuna until I showed them the label. You can't find alot of these products in regular grocery stores unless you live in an area where one of our Colleges or Universities are located. The next time I talk to my dad I'll get some info on how and where to procure some of these products...

I was raised vegetarian and didn't eat meat until my early teens. I rarely eat meat anymore except for the occasional chicken salad wrap or salmon fillet. I'm thinking about giving up meat for good after the 4th of July and just eating fish on rare occassions. What can I say, I'm addicted to Blackened Salmon.

I have access to hundreds if not thousands of really yummy vegetarian recipes so I'll start posting them on the munchies forum if anyone is interested. Oh yes I almost forgot. One of our Church's Universities has a Vegetarian/Vegan Chef program. I can't remember which University has this program but I'll find out if anyone is interested.

    Happy Veg-munching ya'll.

coincedence? i think not. were all so interconnected, more than you guys can even imagine right now. synchronosity, mmm...

and fuck no vegetarianism isnt a phase... damn that sounded kind of harsh, i doubt any of you all here have virgin ears though. HAHA 'damn that sounded kind of harsh'.. for me anyway its an incredibly easy simple decision as i imagine it is for most anybody but SUCH an important and valuable choice to make... a way of life and something i feel real passionate about..

It annoys me how people assume that just because a lot of young people do something, then it is in some way stupid or not valid. Thats a typical old stuffy persons view. I think theyre totally wrong. I think when young people have ideas we should listen, as theyre usually a lot more in tune with things than older people, who sometimes become set in their ways. Life goes forwards, not backwards...and vegetarianism is just one of the things that gets laughed off and degraded because it is associated with the young. Weve entered the age of aquarius, and the new generations are getting more insight and knowledge, as well as a sensitivity which should be encouraged, not laughed at.

Ive been a veggie since i was 14 and know i will never eat a dead animal again.

Adolecence is when we are supposed to be trying on idenities, and discovering what we want to have in our own.
My son wants dreads one month and long hair the next and spiky short after that. What is a "phase?"
I'd think paranting is a phase as in eventually the kids grow you out of it, or at least into a different relationship with it.
On a parenting side, I see kids whipping through interests to see what really is there in their hearts.
Some whip though vegetarianism. Some stay for a while, a year, a few years, a decade or two...
For some kids it is a point of finding who they are, and for some adults, too. Moves, divorces and deaths and close calls all are points of entry for rediscovering YOU.

My folks are free thinkers so that would explain why they're anti-war Liberal Democrats and vegetarians. :)

Hey Drumminmama its good to hear that Loma Linda and Worthington products are more widely available in regular grocery stores. I grew up near small towns in the South and currently live in the Midwest so that would explain why I haven't seen many vegi-"meat" products besides the Morningstar Farms line in stores. I saw more than a few Wakarusa food vendors hawking Loma Linda corndogs and hotdogs.

Vegetarianism may be a phase for some people but for most S.D.A church members its a lifelong practice. I've known more than a few fellow church members that have never eaten meat in their entire lives.
