My mother's (German) first car was a Thing. She said it was awesome. I've had two Volkswagens, both 1980 Rabbit convertibles. Most people (hippies) who buy VWs, hell, most VW lovers, buy older models...used at least. This is not taking money away from American workers. I bought mine from AMERICANS. Second hand. Recycled the cars, if you will. They are dependable and reliable, for the most part. And mine were so easy to work on, I could do a lot of it myself. There is not too much in the world today that hasn't been created from the exploitation or destruction of one culture or another
Yea, that doesnt mean you can't turn the thing into a killer hippy hang out/car. Its cheap to run, hardly ever brakes down, simple, and alot of room. I dont really get why you said hitler personly disined it. Who cares who made it... Plus im german
You just cant justify your wish that nobody drives them by saying "evil germans built them". You made your point by saying those cars are inefficient and polluting... But before it comes to VW Bettle cars, you'll have to stop women from opening their mouths when they are eye-lining, or kill obese people, or make the british drive on the left. and etc. You cant prevent people from doing things that you find irrational.
hitler was evil ...he drobe a vw bush is evil ... he drives a ford i guess we shouldnt drive anything eccept for japanese cars
they're just cars dude chill out. they became associated with hippies because they were cheap and good on gas and you can fix them easily. they still dont make a van that gets 34 MPG like my 66 bus did.
Wayfaring Stranger is right. In the 60s the Volkswagens were the best choice if you wanted cheap, fuel-efficient transportation, thus they became popular with hippies, and they became a hippie icon after they started showing up with psychedelic paint jobs. American-made cars of the day were overpowered gas guzzlers. Nowadays there are better choices out there if you want a car that gets good gas mileage for the number of passengers they can carry, especially since Volkswagens aren't of the same quality they used to be. But they're still popular with hippie nostalgia buffs, and I enjoy seeing a classic VW minibus with a wild paint job. But who wants to see a Chrysler minivan with such a paint job? After WWII the allies worked at rebuilding Germany's economy in order to make them a successful democracy (with varied results, granted). One method was to open up our markets to German automobiles, including the Volkswagen. Some people refused to buy anything German, just as they refused to buy any product stamped, "Made in Japan". Then again there were those among us who felt that the war was over and it was time to get over it and move on, and that's what we did when we bought Volkswagens.
In Australia, there are three times as many new Toyotas as Mitsubishis.Yet Mitsubishis are selling (in real terms) for about one third less than the equivalent Toyota. It would seem to me that one bunch of buyers are a complete bunch of mugs.Which one though?
The point still stands: Hippies claim to be "enviromental friendly", against popular trends, and have some form of convictions. In this instance none of it is true. Its a hippy trend to drive a VW, despite all of their shortcomings. Usually hippies are the first to jump on someone for driving an inefficient SUV, so why is it ok for them to drive an inefficient VW? There is no smog control on a VW, no emissions, no computer to ensure optimum gas mileage....so why are you being hypocrites?
I don't know about you but my VW has to pass emmisions every year. It is butt ugly, it does break down, but its utilitarian as hell. It gets 20-25MPG, license plates cost $45.00 a year as opposed to $800.00 or so for a new car. I paid $400.00 for it and have driven is 20,000 miles since. My bus was not designed until 1949, therefore not thought up by hitler. All in all my bus kicks ass.
I understand that your bus wasn't designed by Hitler, the Beetle was though. What year was your bus built? emissions laws vary by county, so a VW that smokes and pollutes will be ok somewhere else. My question is: Why is it OK to drive a polluting old car when we have the technology to drive something cleaner and operate it with an alternative fuel (E85, Biodiesel). I drive a 2wd truck and I intentionally drive less then 10K miles per year. I get close to 30mpg and have small long life tires (the smaller the tire the less the pollution). I still don't feel like I have the right to tell others that SUV's are evil because I'm still motoring down the highway next to them. An engine is an engine, except a wonderful diesel engine.
Everything here are good reasons... Not to mention...It probally burns Hitlers ass to see exactly who holds these vans and bugs in the highest regards. Know why Hitler didn't drink????? 'Cause it made him mean.
If I'm not mistaken, the vast majority of registered vehicles in the United States that run on biodiesel are vw's. By your logic, should I give up Italian foods because the the Roman's massacred millions of people when they were expanding their empire?
Hitler helped introduce the Volkswagen, therefore people who drive Volkswagens are evil. Everyone must stop driving Volkswagens.:X Hitler was a vegetarian, therefore vegetarians are evil. Everyone must go out and eat a Big Mac. Hitler was opposed to smoking, therefore people who don't smoke are evil. Everyone must go out and buy a pack of Camel non-filters. See? Morality is simple!
Once again your analysis of my statement is flawed. Italian food didn't build swords for the Romans did it? Cigarettes (directly) didn't kill Jews. Vegetarians weren't trying to take over the world and didn't contribute anything to the war machine! Volkswagen on the other hand built the engines that powered the machines that did the killing. The wouldn't be in business if they hadn't supported the war. I don't believe that the majority of Biodiesel vehicles are VW. They are the minority of diesels in the US. I don't know about the rest of the world. When I'm talking about hippies driving Beetles that are inefficient I'm speaking of the older ones. The new ones have taken advantage of the advanced technology; therefore I don't care about them.
